How Marc Marquez’s road to seven MotoGP world championships compares to Valentino Rossi

Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi share a rivalry like no other in MotoGP history, and their career statistics reinforce the small gap that separates the two legends in the discussion of who is the greatest rider in the history of the premier class.

What was once a relationship based on idolatry and mentorship began in 2010. He quickly descended into disrepute following the events of the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix.

Valentino Rossi I felt Mark Marquez Jorge Lorenzo’s title hopes were being helped, and it ended with a dramatic break between the two MotoGP stars. The Italian took it out on the current Honda rider during the run.

Since then, the two have not spoken a word to each other, and probably have no plans to do so anytime soon.

However, Rossi’s legacy lives on into his retirement, and Marquez is currently trying his best to emulate the Italian legend in every measure possible.

Compared to Valentino Rossi, Marc Marquez’s path to seven MotoGP titles

A comparison between the career statistics of Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi shows two different paths to the seven premier class titles they both currently hold.

In this run, Marquez has competed in 206 races, significantly more than Rossi’s 166 starts, largely due to the injury-plagued gap between 2020 and 2023 in the Spaniard’s career.

Despite having 40 more entries, Marquez’s total of 73 wins is less than Rossi’s 77.

This results in a large difference in the winning percentage; Rossi won 46.39 percent of the races, while Marquez won 35.44 percent in seventh place.

Rossi’s era was characterized by remarkable consistency, finishing in the top three in over 76% of his races.

He rarely falls out of contention, contrasting with the high-risk, limit-finding style that Marquez has deployed as he sets out to dominate in MotoGP.

Cervera’s Ant holds a podium rating of 61.17% and while securing 126 top-three finishes, similar to Rossi’s 127, he needed many more starts to reach the doctor’s peak.

On the merit front, favor swings strongly to the Spaniard.

Marquez secured 74 poles (35.92%), making him one of the greatest riders in history at a single round.

On the other hand, Rossi’s 48 poles (28.92%) put their Sunday bodies ahead of race pace rather than single lap pace.

True or false? Valentino Rossi was a better MotoGP rider than Marc Marquez.
