We all know the goal: two strokes or less per hole. But how many total shocks should you get every round? How much does that number change depending on your handicap?
We asked Stretch For placing data in the real world in a range of handicaps, and what we found can surprise you. The difference between a 25-Handicap and a scratched golf player is not always what you think. Eliminating only one or two three-trum per round can be the easiest way to shave shocks from your game.
Average point per round with handicap
You will expect the best players to be better placed – but the total number of round shocks does not change so much. The biggest difference you will see is the three -putt percentage. A scratched golf with three shocks only three percent of the time, while a 25 percent stroke golf with 25 percent of the time.
Keep in mind that first first with three plates are a problem of closeness. The accuracy of the approach, the greens in adjusting and the short game distance control all play a major role.
| Permanent | AVG Puts/Round | 3-FUSE/Round |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 29.9 | 0.8 |
| 5 | 30.3 | 1.5 |
| 10 | 31.2 | 2.4 |
| 15 | 32.1 | 3.8 |
| 20 | 33.4 | 4.6 |
| 25 | 34.3 | 5.8 |
Make percentages by distance
We have already seen how the highest handicap players accumulate more with three strokes, often because they are setting from longer distances. But the short lost shocks are just as expensive and they occur more often than most players understand.
The percentage of make -up within six legs drops quickly as the handicap increases. A scratched golf player makes about three out of four (+/- 75 percent) from three to six feet. In a handicap 25, it is at only 48 percent.
| distance | 0 hcp | 10 hcp | 25 hcp |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3 ft | 98% | 96% | 88% |
| 3-6 ft | 76% | 65% | 48% |
| 6-9 ft | 49% | 39% | 30% |
| 9–12 ft | 34% | 26% | 17% |
| 18–24 ft | 12% | 10% | 6% |
| 30 ft+ | 4% | 3% | 2% |
Do you think the best players always hit him close? Not exactly.
Many scratch players hit every green in the regulation and stick it close. While it is true that they hit more greens, nearly 60 percent compared to only nine percent for a handicap 25, they are not exactly leaving themselves every time.
Of the 150 yards outside, the players scratched on average about 40 meters from the hole. In a handicap 25, that number climbs over 100 meters. No player in this situation is in a two -putt guaranteed range.
Here’s where the highest handicap players can gain an advantage. You often miss the greens, but that means your next goal is a chip or pitch instead of a long hunt. If you can get that stroke within six legs, you have approximately a 50 percent chance to make the putt. But if you are leaving it at 15 to 20 feet, your percentage falls to single figures, and now you are just trying to avoid a three-putt.
Most high chip handicappers at 20 or 30 meters, then three-putt from there.
If you want to reduce your total blows per round:
- Work on continuous intake of chips and your pits within 10 feet.
- Work to make more strokes from three to six feet, where the percentages do quickly for higher handicaps

What to do with this information
The data is great, but getting data and turning them into ways to reduce your handicap is what matters. Here are some ways to use this information to help reduce your results.
- Follow with your three cubs: Write them, circle them and understand what distances or situations cause them more often.
- Practice the placement of the delay: You will never eliminate with three strokes, but control of speed from 30-plus feet is a very valuable placement skill.
- Focus on 3-6 footers: Especially if you are shooting in the 80s or 90s, improving your percentage in this rank may save you some strokes immediately.
- Be better about the greens: You will lose Greens. This is inevitable. Theelli is to learn to chip or open 10-15 meters instead of 25-30.
Final thoughts
Whenever I hit a historic note of the note – making 90, 80, 70 – putter was the ordinary denominator. It was not about hitting 15 greens or its 280 running. It was fewer three platoons, more a foil. Setting will not fix everything in your game but is Impact is seen quickly.
