How Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari Formula 1 could help him invest in the KTM MotoGP team.

Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton has spoken of investing in the KTM MotoGP team. That’s according to Pete Bier, director of motorsport.

KTM MotoGP has faced a financial crisis that has put their future in serious doubt. They have outstanding debts of around €3bn or £2.5bn.

According to Mattighofen, they are subject to Austrian law. This means they can manage themselves.

But they have been advised to consider withdrawing from MotoGP, which would allow them to spend their competitive budgets to pay them back. In addition to their factory team, KTM also supplies bikes to the Tech3 team.

The 39-year-old is clearly keen to own his own team in the premier class of motorcycle racing. Hamilton is the greatest F1 driver of all time, with seven world championships, 105 wins and 104 pole positions.

Red Bull are the title sponsors of the KTM team, which in theory creates an immediate barrier. Hamilton has had a long-standing relationship with rival energy drinks brand Monster.

However, Hamilton’s move from Mercedes to Ferrari has prompted him to review his personal sponsorship deals. And as Sports businessNow it’s ready to split with Monster.

While Bayer, Red Bull and KTM were ‘inseparable’, Hamilton’s relationship with Monster was not an issue in early negotiations. But in talks with Celsius, another company in that sphere, he could work out a deal that would better suit the needs of both F1 and MotoGP.

Indeed, the Red Bull/Monster conflict was no exception because of Hamilton was about to part ways with the American company. Monster are the long-time title sponsors of KTM’s MotoGP rivals Yamaha.

Why would Lewis Hamilton invest in a less attractive MotoGP team?

KTM would be an interesting choice if Hamilton wants to establish a MotoGP presence. They are arguably the least attractive of all factory groups.

They have yet to challenge for the title in the premier class, and their all-time stats are comparable to Aprilia. Even then, the Italians signed world champion Jorge Martin.

But perhaps that’s what made them so attractive to Hamilton. Their value may have declined given the current dire business situation, but the prospect of helping the team achieve long-term success may also excite him.
