Once again the Americans won in the Presidents Cupbeating the international team for the 10th time in a row, 18.5 to 11.5.
The international team put up a more spirited fight, rallying from 5-0 down after Thursday’s first session to level the matches on Friday with a 5-0 sweep of their own. But the weekend proved their downfall as well The US withdrew in the last three sessionsincluding a 7.5-4.5 score in Sunday’s singles.
Here’s how each player (and captain) performed in Montreal.
Team USA
Xander Schauffele
Register: 4-1-0
Grade: A+
The only man to win two major championships this season played like he did after his only blemish came in the disaster in the US on Friday and he came out in the first game on Sunday and immediately quashed any idea of Jason Day leading an international attack . Furyk alluded to the fact that Schauffele was a leader in the team room, giving him the plus mark.
Patrick Cantlay
Register: 4-1-0
Grade: or
Cantlay was right up there with his close friend Schauffele, earning a 4-1-0 record, his only loss again coming to Schauffele on Friday in the foursome. The rest of the week, Cantlay was unstoppable, especially at the end of his four-ball session on Saturday morning, where he went five-under over the final five holes to claim a 2-and-1 victory.
Collin Morikawa
Register: 4-1-0
Grade: A-
The only blip on Morikawa’s record compared to the other two was that his singles victory over Adam Scott came after the Cup had already been clinched. Regardless, Morikawa still excelled, leading Sahith Theegala to a Day 1 victory and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler on Saturday morning for 15 holes.
Keegan Bradley
Register: 2-1-0
Grade: B+
In his first US national appearance in 10 years, Bradley had the full-circle moment of achieving the American victory by defeating the international team’s best player this week in Si Woo Kim. In his two four-ball matches, he helped Wyndham Clark to 1 Up over Taylor Pendrith and Christiaan Bezuidenhout with five birdies, including the decider at 18. On Saturday, he and Clark clashed with Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim.
Russell Henley
Register: 3-1-0
Grade: B+
Henley quietly earned three points in his first action in the team event and was the fourth-best U.S. player from an earned run standpoint, according to DataGolf. He no doubt outplayed Scheffler in their Saturday foursome win and then took care of Sungjae Im early on Sunday to lead the USA to victory.
Sam Burns
Register: 3-0-1
Grade: B
Thanks to Friday’s back-to-back carnage, Sam Burns finished as the only player on either side without a loss this week. While he let Cantlay hold it in their two four-ball matches, he and Morikawa took out a crucial point in the foursome on Saturday afternoon. He let the lead slip away against energetic international bunny Tom Kim, but his hold from full point was still precious.
Scottie Scheffler
Register: 3-2-0
Grade: B-
Scheffler’s grade is more a product of expectations than anything else, but it was clear that he was not the player to win the Masters, an Olympic gold medal and six other PGA Tour titles this year. He missed more than 2 shots on the green this week and it just looked like his ball strike wasn’t as sharp as normal. Scheffler is just 3-4-2 in team matches since last year’s Ryder Cup.
Tony Finau
Register: 2-2-0
Grade: C+
Finau won both of his four-ball matches, but he played Schauffele and only factored into his victory in Thursday’s match. On Sunday, he went 2 up against Corey Conners, but the Canadian quickly turned the tables on him in a 5 and 3 victory.
Sahith Theegala
Register: 1-1-1
Grade: C+
Difficult to judge Theegala’s team match debut as he played in just three matches but tried in each of the three formats. He toyed with Morikawa in fours and four-ball, climbing into the clutch with a birdie at the 18th to preserve a 1-up victory during the American sweep. They then took a boat race on Friday before Theegala surprisingly sat out both sessions on Saturday. He split his match with Ben An Sunday.
Max Homa
Register: 1-2-0
Grade: C+
Homa went 0-2 in his two foursome appearances, but fell largely by playing Brian Harman in both sessions, who was the only player on either side not to record a half point. He testified that his form was returning spelling the 1st hole and dropping Mackenzie Hughes 2 and 1. It was surprising not to see him hit four balls considering he is 2-0-1 in the format in the 2023 Ryder Cup and the last Presidents Cup in 2022.
Wyndham Clarke
Register: 1-2-1
Grade: C-
Clark got his win playing Bradley on Thursday, but dragged him to a loss on Saturday morning. He and Finau got drunk on Friday as part of the international rally.
Brian Harman
Register: 0-3-0
Grade: D
Not much to say about it. Harman was the worst player on each team in strokes gained according to DataGolf.
Captain. Jim Furyk
Grade: B+
Furyk succeeded by not messing with what was working. Sure, he could have played more Homa, Theegala and Bradley, but it’s hard to guess a winner.
International Team
Like Woo Kim
Register: 2-2-0
Grade: A-
Kim was arguably the Internacional’s best player, bringing the same energy he brought two years ago when he silenced the crowd in a shocking upset of Justin Thomas. He jumped out to an early lead against Bradley, looking to do the same this year, but the Ryder Cup captain would not be denied. He and Tom Kim were dynamic on Saturday and he led Ben An to a win on Friday in the foursome.
Tom Kim
Register: 1-2-1
Grade: B+
Everyone was shocked when Tom Kim sat down for Friday’s quad session, but it turned out that Kim helped lead the international charge as the noise man. For the second consecutive Presidents Cup, Kim took it to a new level for both sessions on Saturday playing Si Woo Kim, but they were denied a second win by Cantlay and Schauffele. He made several headlines and even caused some controversy this weekbut that’s exactly what the Presidents Cup has lacked over the years.
Hideki Matsuyama
Register: 2-3-0
Grade: B+
The Internationals’ top-ranked player was his normal ball-striking self, but was the worst player around the course and on the green, according to DataGolf. But that didn’t matter during his Sunday singles win over Scheffler. His other win came in a 7-6 thrashing of the top-seeded US pair of Schauffele and Cantlay in Friday’s four-ball.
Adam Scott
Register: 2-3-0
Grade: B
The leader and most experienced international proved that this week by playing all five games despite being the oldest player in each squad. Both of his wins came in fours, along with Taylor Pendrith. He and fellow Aussie Min Woo Lee came up short in their four-ball match together.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout
Register: 2-1-0
Grade: B
Bezuidenhout was the only international with a winning record this week, but both of his wins came against Brian Harman. He actually posted the fourth-worst Hits Won: Total of any player in the game, but wins are wins.
Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith
Registrations: 2-3-0
Grades: B-
Both Conners and Pendrith more than redeemed their poor performances in the 2022 Presidents Cup with two points for a share on home soil. Both went 0-2-0 in four balls.
Byeong Hun An
Register: 1-1-1
Grade: C
An didn’t get a chance to play on Saturday, so we only have three games to judge his week. He and Day narrowly lost to Schauffele and Finau on Thursday and then Si Woo Kim took it to a narrow victory on Friday. He and Theegala played to a draw on Sunday.
Jason’s day
Register: 1-2-0
Grade: C
One of the few veterans in the international team, Day did not make much of an impact this week as he also did not play on Saturday. He had a chance to win a statement against Schauffele as the first match away on Sunday, but was thoroughly beaten.
Mackenzie Hughes
Register: 1-3-0
Grade: C-
Hughes picked up just one win in his Presidents Cup debut in a true home game. He and Conners couldn’t repeat their 6-and-5 game from Friday in either of their Saturday games. He then lost to Homa on Sunday.
Min Woo Lee
Register: 0-1-1
Grade: D+
Lee’s absence on Saturday was shocking and we only saw him in two games. He was able to get on the board with half a point against Clark Sunday, but it was a forgettable debut for the electric Aussie.
Im Sungjae
Register: 1-4-0
Grade: D
I’ve been one of the international team’s best players in the past two Presidents Cups, but I was barely a factor this week, winning just one of its five games.
Captain Mike Weir
Grade: D
Hindsight is always 20/20, but Weir will forever be judged for sending out the same sets on Saturday afternoon as the morning session, the only captain ever to do so. He also played Min Woo Lee only once and constantly played Im despite his acting not being there.
