Ongoing SPOON: Luke Clanton! The 21-year-old PGA Tour player joined me for a spoonful of chocolate Foodge Brownie ice cream in front of the passenger championship. At the time of this interview, Clanton He had played in 14 PGA Tour events, made 10 cuts, had two racing conclusions, three pre-penalty endings and four 10th.
He made his professional debut earlier this month at the RBC Canadian Open, and I was very excited to sit with a new pro -taking into account all his success. It turns out I left the interview an even greater fan of Clanton – His personality, the way he speaks of his sisters and his ability to tell.
We discussed all kinds of things, from the way he went into play with a man on the street who helped increase his confidence in his favorite film.
Although one of my favorite stories he told was how he met his cadet, Jason Wiertel.
I got acquainted with wiertel in Ride, chip and wear Finals in Augusta National on Sunday in front of masters. I was walking with my friends Gabby Herzig and Emma Devine when one of the longest men I have ever seen approached Herzig, introduced Devine and me and invited us to sit near 18. Wiertel was there to support his daughter’s friends as they competed at the event and cheered for the children as if they were his.
All four of us sat together as he told us about every girl who was coming. Where they were, how they were their family and how nervous they were. I would never encounter someone so passionate about the new golf. He was on the moon for the children who were not his own. I remember thinking that every new athlete should have a support system that includes someone like Wiertel. After going our separate ways, I asked Herzig how he knew. “This is Luke Clarton’s caddy,” she said.
Quickly forward about this episode of The Scoop. Herzig had told me a little about how Wiertel’s daughter played a role in her ending in Clarton’s bag, and I wanted full story.
“So we were in the north and south amateur, I think it was summer before I went to college. So I was 18 … I was hitting balls on the member side, and I was not technically thought out to be there. But I was with a member and we were just hitting some balls and saw a little girl and a big boy like 6’7.” And I was like, who is this guy? I was hitting the wedge and the little girl went through me and said ‘How far away you hit your shaken wedge?’ We Kinda started a conversation and Jason went through. And Jason was talking to me and just trying to mind … He was like, ‘Do you have a caddy this week?’ And I said ‘Oh, I have Bill’, who was an elderly gentleman, about 80 years old. I was like, ‘he probably won’t have caddy for the game game.’ Wiertel goes, ‘Well, if you want to win the tour, I’ll get the bag.’
I was like, ‘woah. Slow down a little man, I don’t know who you are. ‘So through Instagram I found it, and we were writing a little back and forth. I was like ‘here’s my time, it’s 6:50 am in the morning. Match play. If you want to appear, appear. ‘So I go there like, 5:20 and he is in string with a towel in the back pocket. And I was like, ‘Okay, this guy is quite serious.’
So we never really spoke, we never depended. We go to the first tee and just hit it right away … We continued to win that week, and that’s not the best part for it. When the ceremony was happening, I was giving a speech and looking around trying to find it. I couldn’t find it, so I texm. I said ‘Where are you?’ He goes, ‘Oh, I’m looking for my daughter.‘
So he was driving shortly after we won, he immediately led to the Golf course to caddy for his daughter for a nine -hole event. So I walked there and said, ‘Boy I love you in the bag. You are not just a great person, but you are a great father and you have good morals. ‘So he has for me in numerous American amateurs and he is connected to me in many PGA Tour events and now we are here. “
Call to Lucy Wiertel for the role she played in taking her father that concert. I’m glad the whole thing worked!
Luke Clanton’s skin is now live on the YouTube channel of golf. I think you will enjoy this!
