Three hours north of San Francisco, passing Redwoods and reliable cell reception, lies an abnormality of a golf course, one that never took memorandum exclusive AND Excessive green fees.
For decades along the northern coast of Sonoma, Sea farm golf ties Offered invaluable Pacific images for a minimalist layout for the better under $ 100 in the round. Dokush could play it. Not many people did it. The course attracted a loyal bunch of locals and a small cult following elsewhere. But in most days, you can enter the pro -war shop and have no trouble coming out.
In conventional terms of the Golf Operator, Sea Ranch made little sense. Nor did he make money. Last January, ownership decided to suffice. It closed the course, citing “unstable” financial losses. The closure did not count as the main national news. But for the locals, it shortened. One group of them gathered, and their nine -month campaign has now been repaid. Sea Ranch is returning to life.
“There was no objection,” says Dale Carlsen, a tall owner of the Sea House, who helped direct the efforts. “The community was excited. And we’re excited to welcome people again.”
To understand the death and resurrection of the Sea Ranch, it helps to know a little about its birth. The course took shape – the nine -front nine was opened in 1974, back in 1995 – and, as the serving community serving, it was rooted in a special moment in time. Conceived in the 1960s amid the promotion of the environmental movement, the Sea Ranch was foreseen as a place that, in the words of its planners, “would work in harmony with nature”. Instead of subdivisions, his plan required groups of unilateral, unilateral wood houses, many of the prominent modern architects, all intended to mix in the coastal landscape. The golf course followed the same philosophy. Robert Muir Graves, who designed all 18 holes, placed the course gently on the ground – there was no other way. Even from the strict California standards, the Sea Ranch construction codes are very accurate.
Like many remote areas, Sea Ranch flourished during Covid. Immovable property grew a lot. Although the market has been set since that time, the average price of the community house, since August 2025, has been $ 1.3 million, according to Redfin. Unlike many golf residential communities, Ranch Sea Owners have not been rated a fee to help maintain the course, but many residents pay for an annual golf membership covering the unlimited game.
Sea Ranch is also home to a lodge, with a restaurant and coastal accommodation. During the pandemic, that lodge and course were taken by a group of investments that included Patrick and John Collinson, associates of billionaire of payment services company, stripe. Soon after taking over, the new ownership renewed The Sea Ranch Clubhouse, improved the running range and collected maintenance. During a temporary winter closure, it also restructured its membership, increasing annual liabilities from $ 3,500 to $ 5,000.
But that did not approach to balance the books. In January, when the course was closed, said a representative of the Ranch Sea Golf.com that the golf operation was losing “hundreds of thousands of dollars a year”.
The resurrection of the course called for creative thinking, which led to a solution that fits beautifully with the founding philosophy of the community and the course. Carlsen and others involved in the effort created a nonprofit, the North Coast preservation society, which has rented the course for $ 1 a year. NO -profit will focus on protecting flora, fauna, coastal images of the area, recreational uses and educational programs. At the same time, a lucrative entity, Links Coast North, is raised to tend to business operations. In a recent letter to residents, Ranch Sea Management announced the return of a “uniquely owned course by this community”.
Even after the closure of January, ownership maintained the crew of the basis at work. Conditions, always a touch of design, remain on the tough side, so only limited game is allowed for the time being. Kempersports – who manages such Marque resorts as Bandon Dunes and Sand Valley – is brought to handle operations. An official reopening is scheduled for thanks, with the exact date that will still come.
Green tariffs will grow modestly, but will remain a relative shopping, growing by $ 85 on weekends. A new membership plan is also at work. Beyond the revival of a community match, says Carlsen, the goal is for the Sea Ranch to stop in a wider loop-a journey that can even take in the Presidio in San Francisco, Northwood, Alister Mackezie’s Nine-Hlem in the Sonoma County Redwoods, and links to Bodega Harbour, 80 minutes in the south.
