I really hate to say it, but after wearing a sweatshirt and jeans this morning, there’s no denying it: Fall is here, and, in many places around the country, that means cooler weather is on its way.
Despite my personal aversion to shorter days and lower temperatures, at least we can still step it up and play golf – even if it requires some adjustments.
For one, the ground is likely to be softer, meaning the ball won’t roll as much when hitting a fairway or green. There are also a few different rules to know when playing fall golf (as “leaf rule”), which can help when your ball can be covered by a loose obstacle.
But one of the most critical adjustments golfers need to make during fall golf is understanding how the weather affects distance, which will help you a lot. decide which club to use on certain shots.
So how does the cooler weather affect your shooting distances? I extracted some data from Trackman to get the answer.
Trackman data shows how weather influences golf distances
According to Trackman, your carry distances will be greatly affected by temperature changes.
The golf technology brand first compared carry distances between morning and afternoon rounds, when temperatures can vary by 10 degrees or more. So if you had a machine at six o’clock in the morning, you would have to play in a much different way than if you had a moment at 11 o’clock in the morning. Similarly, you’ll need to adjust even more to a mid-day snapshot, when it’s usually the warmest part of the day.
Based on Trackman data, when you hit the same 9-iron at different times of day, carry distances vary by as much as seven yards—that’s about half a club when you’re trying to land your shot on the green. See the results in the image below, with carry distances measured at 55 degrees (left), 70 degrees (middle), and 95 degrees (right).
Although seven yards may not feel like a ton of difference, it can mean landing in a bunker versus being in the center of the putting green. So understanding the adjustments you need to make can help you play smarter, prepare better, and hit the right shot with the right club so you’re not disappointed with the outcome.
Remember, this is just a guide to help you make the best decision for your shot. So while there are other factors to consider – such as whether the ball made contact with the face on center versus just off the heel or toe, or if there’s any wind or rain – it’s good to have some basic knowledge to arm yourself with when you’re teeing up. until this fall.
