Hocker-Ker-Nugus-Ingebrigtsen in Zurich Diamond League

The best four athletes of the Olympic 1500 m final will meet in a rematch at the Letzigrund stadium in Switzerland.

Cole Hawker, Josh Kerr, Jared Nuguse and Jakob Ingebrigtsen will compete in the Diamond League in Zurich (September 5), a repeat of the Olympic 1500m final.

Less than a second separated the quartet at the Stade de France as Hawker cruised to a historic victory in an Olympic record 3:27.65 to move seventh on the all-time 1500m list.

Kerr set a British 1500m record of 3:27.79, beating Mo Farah’s mark of 3:28.81 from 2013, to take the silver medal, while Nuguse became the second-fastest US athlete in history with a bronze time of 3:27.80.

After all the talk between Kerr and Ingebrigtsen, the Norwegian finished fourth in 3:28.24.

Without pacemakers or wave-light technology, Ingebrigtsen, trying to avoid a late lap like in the previous two world championships, attempted to run the Olympic final from arm to arm.

He opened with a first lap of 54.9 seconds, at which point Ingebrigtsen was on world record pace, before taking the 800m in 1:51.50.

The field was spread out, but the likes of Kerr, Nugus, Hawker and Timothy Cheruiyot stuck with Ingebrigtsen.

Just after the 1200m mark, the Briton and the two Americans jumped off. Cheruiyot could no longer keep up with the pace and with 100m to go, as Kerr rounded outside Ingebrigtsen, Hawker turned on the inside for home.

The American held his hands high as he crossed the line first in front of a stunned crowd at the Stade de France.

Now they will do it all again in Zurich, and this time there will be pacemakers and wave light technology.

Ingebrigtsen did not compete in the 1500m at last year’s Weltklasse Zürich, and that was won by Nuguse in 3:30.49 and Carey in 3:30.51. Hawker finished 9th in 3:32.00.

The quartet is in such good form at the moment, expect fast times in Zurich.

They might not break Hicham El Gerouj’s world record of 3:26.00 from 1998, but it could be an incredibly fast race.
