Golf, says Mark Hubbard, is pretty stupid.
He is a qualified resource. This week, of Hubbard playing the PGA Tour American Express tourand entering Sunday’s final round, he was tied for fifth. Even this week, however, Hubbard is competing in front of a sizable gallery of family members and loved ones displaced from their homes by the California wildfires.
It put things into perspective for him, he said.
“Yeah, it’s been super weird,” Hubbard said. “I’m moving now to a new house and that should be exciting, and with everything that’s going on, it feels weird and almost bad to be excited about it because there’s just been so much loss and anger with everyone and with close people. to me It’s been tough, but like anything, it puts things into perspective and it definitely makes it easier to realize that this is just a dumb game and none of this matters at all.”
On Friday, a reporter asked him if it was hard to focus on golf, or if golf was a nice escape.
“Yeah, I think it’s a nice escape to be out there and not think about other things,” Hubbard said. “It feels like a little oasis there now. Also, I mean, selfishly, it’s been horrible for them, but I’m seeing a ton of them more than normal, so it was just great to see them and try to be there for them.”
