When it comes to a golfer’s equipment, the golf ball is so often the most overlooked piece in the bag.
Most golfers will spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars to get a custom fitter to make sure each of their 14 clubs is tuned and optimized for their swing and game (properly), but rarely do they spend the same resources on fitting or even testing the right golf ball.
“I think most people out there use whatever is free,” he said GOLF is fully equipped co-host Wadeh Maroun on this week’s episode. “Like they go play a golf tournament or something and they get a dozen Pro V1 or Pro V1x or Callaway or TaylorMade balls for free, whatever. And they’ll play them until they get something else for free.”

Maroun stressed the importance of passing a golf ball device in addition to club equipment, but he also suggested players try online Ballnamic tool, created by Ping.
Co-host Kris McCormack offered the idea that when golfers identify some serious options about what golf balls they can use, they start testing around the green before heading back to the tee.
“I always tell people; start from the green and come back,” he said. “Everything works off the tee, a few feet apart.”
McCormack explained that it just doesn’t make a huge difference in how far the golf balls will go, but the difference in spin and control around the greens can be massive.

Step One: IDENTIFY YOUR OBJECT. The first step is to gather information. Where is my target, what is the distance, wind conditions and what club should I hit? Step two: visualize the shot path. This step is all about connecting with the target and visualizing the shot or shot you want to hit. Step Three: FOCUS ON THE POINT. In this step, you stay connected to the target, clear your mind of analytical thoughts, focus on the green dot, and execute the shot you visualized.

“All the independent golf ball tests that come out, it’s always 10, 11 yards between the longest ball and the shortest ball,” he said. “Then there’s always the question of, okay, if you’ve got somebody who’s down and across versus inside and up, what’s going to be the longest golf ball for those different types of launch patterns and hitting positions? So the golf ball for me is always something I tell people, start on the green and work back up.”
Once you’ve identified which golf balls you like around the green, go back to your irons and see which ones perform in that category. Finally, you should only have a few options once you get to the tee and you can easily decide which ball flies best from the driver.
