Hayes and McMillan claim the queens of the northern cross of England

Held at Knicksford Tattoo Park on January 25th, the club’s runners competed for medals in this historic championship on January 25th.

Angus McMillan and Lauren Heyes took the senior titles at the gloriously sunny Tattoo Park, where nearly 400 men and more than 200 women finished in the autoclave.

Salford and Leeds City took the senior team gold.

Men

The senior men’s race was close as Tom Power and Harry Wacefield added minor podium places, but it was import Angor Macmillan who emerged Tripe Yorkshire champion.

Beaten second last year, McMillan “won” the competitive first leg of the Autumn Northern Road Relay and finished second at the Berry Hill Park Crossing in the first leg.

Second-placed Tom Power led Macmillan in early January, a race that marked an improvement on last year’s eighth-placed Hallamshire run.

Back in about third, Harry Waitfield led Salford to the team title, but has only been active in running for the fight for five years, and now last year’s 1500m title came on the track.

It was his first major cross country championship, so finishing third and the top team was a nice reward.

Women

Lauren Heyes has much more championship experience in the running and stretched the field before winning comfortably by around 150 meters from Sophie Tarver.

Katie Wood was a similar distance away in third, but the team title went to fourth-placed Leeds City, who were three places behind.

More than 16 years ago, Hayes raced in the World and European cross-country championships, placing third in the Euro Junior race, before several more representative awards in the Euro and World events.

Since then, the Hallamshire Harrier has been a constant presence after winning the North Under 20 title in 2009 and second in the race last year and in 2019.

For Tarver, who moved up from third last year, this was the first 2025 first place and repeated his second place from 2022.

Yorkshire champion Katy Wood produced her best work on earth despite flying a number of good quality 5000m and 5km races.

Ethiopian asylum seeker Biruk Kebed and Abdimajiid Darod comfortably got the better of the junior men’s race, but his Morpeth Club took no prisoners.

KEBEDE says about his power on page 10:I’m an asylum seeker living in the UK, I dream of one day at the Olympics like my hero Mo Farah.”

In turn, Darood has been winning the Yorkshire Titles for more than five years.

Matthew Drummond-Clark (David Hewitson)

The under-17 men’s 1500m race saw Matthew Drumcond-Clarke take the win from Merseyside champion Liam ns onson in fifth Fifth.

The closest boys’ race of the day was in the under-15 event, where the English Schools’ Champion, England Athletics Champion, was just third last year.

Yarid Lem (David Hewitson)

Thomas Hastings won leg one to 13 at Berry Hill Park in November last year and then took the title from Ollie Curran earlier this month.

It was even closer in the junior women’s race, where winner Amelie Lane, who retained her title and runner-up Elena, could not be separated on rounded times race over 800 m.

Elaros Whitworth (David Howitzon)

Earlier in the month, Elaros Whitworth braved icy weather and bitterly cold weather on the Wolds to claim the Lincolnshire title, only to find some blessed relief in the winter after finishing fourth in the championship earlier in the month by just 80 metres.

Northeastern champion Gabrielle Synder, who was only fourth last year, had a similar margin to Olivia Lee, who was third in September, in the 15-year-old girls’ race.

Sienna Lawren, who is up north here in the 13th, added to her Yorkshire title earlier in the month, again past her third birthday.
