Harbhajan Singh shares his predictions for semi-final berths in T20 World Cup 2026
Harbhajan believes hosts India will be strong contenders to go all the way, citing their depth, balance and familiarity with home conditions. According to the World Cup winner, playing in India gives the home team a significant advantage, but coping with the mental pressure of a global tournament will be crucial.
“I think India have a very good chance to win the world cup because they are a very strong team and they play at home. They know the conditions better than anyone. But the World Cup pressure is something they have to handle better than others, which is the most important thing.” Harbhajan reports with reference to Gulf Today.
Along with India, Harbhajan called Australia automatic contenders, highlighting their pedigree in ICC tournaments. The former spinner noted that Australia’s ability to perform under pressure makes them a dangerous side in any World Cup, regardless of the conditions or format.
He also supported South Africa, praising their recent form and consistency in white-ball cricket. The Proteas often enter tournaments as favorites only to fall short at crucial stages, but Harbhajan feels their current momentum could eventually translate into a deep run.
Completing his semi-final line-up is Afghanistan, who he believes could be a major threat on Indian turf. Highlighting Afghanistan’s strong spin attack and growing confidence, Harbhajan said they have the ability to beat any opponent in sub-continental conditions.
“I think Australia have always been a very good team and are the main contenders to win any trophy. South Africa are the other contenders for the title with their current form. They have been playing great cricket recently. Afghanistan are also very strong with their spinners. I think they can beat anyone in these conditions. So these are my four picks for the semi-finals.” Harbhajan added.

Two-time champions England have no place in Harbhajan’s list
One of the most notable aspects of Harbhajan’s prediction is the absence of two-time T20 World Cup champions England. Despite being recognized as one of England’s most explosive white-ball teams, Harbhajan did not include them as semi-finalists, saying conditions and consistency could play a decisive role.
England’s aggressive batting approach has brought them success in the past, but they may find it difficult to adapt to slower surfaces and high-pressure knock-out scenarios in India. With several fast-improving teams and conditions favoring spin-heavy attacks, even established powerhouses can be extremely thin for error.
