Coming to Gill’s defence, Harbhajan stressed that the decision should not be taken as a setback or a warning sign for the 26-year-old. According to the veteran spinner, Gill’s classic technique and strong personality remain his biggest assets, which will eventually help him regain his place in the shortest format as well.
Harbhajan noted that Gill has never taken his place in the side and continues to work on his game despite intense scrutiny. He added that competition is a healthy sign for Indian cricket and sometimes even the best players have to sit out when team formations demand change.
Harbhajan noted that one of the strongest arguments in Gill’s favor is the leadership responsibility he has been given in other formats. Gill continues to lead India in Tests and One Day Internationals, a clear indication that the selectors and team management see him as a long-term leader and cornerstone of Indian cricket.
“It’s not a signal for Gill. He wasn’t getting his place, but the competition is so tough that there are many players who can take that place and do well for the team. It’s not the end of the road for him. He’s a great player with great technique. I believe he’ll make a brilliant comeback and we mustn’t forget he’s still the Test captain.” Harbhajan told “India Today”.
