Hansi Flick has revealed that he has given ‘clear orders’ to goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen so that he does not repeat his costly mistake in Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat by Monaco.
A misplaced pass eventually led to Eric Garcia’s early red card in Barcelona’s Champions League opener, an incident which Flick admitted completely changed the game.
Ter Stegen’s performance has attracted intense scrutiny on social media and while Flick was happy to offer his support to the German, he acknowledged that such mistakes cannot be repeated.
“Playing with his feet is one of Ter Stegen’s strengths, apart from stopping the shot,” said Flick. “He can catch it with his feet, and that’s part of our style. It starts with Ter Stegen at the back.
“Mistakes are human. We have to learn, and we’ve looked at it. I hope I gave him clear orders so it doesn’t happen again. And I hope it doesn’t happen.”
Ter Stegen acknowledged his role in Garcia’s dismissal and confessed he felt sorry for his team-mate after the game.
“I feel bad for him,” she said Barcelona said stopper. “We played 80 minutes without a player. This shouldn’t happen, but this is football. It hurts to lose, we gave our best, we wanted to get at least a point. In the end we conceded a goal, which we did. no he deserves it at that moment.”
