Haney rejects Romero’s triangle theory after Ryan claim

The comment came as Rolly, 30, discussed Haney and the possibility of the two 147-lb champions in the ring.

Haney responded on social media today after the comments circulated online, dismissing Romero’s argument and saying results involving other fighters do not determine the outcome of a future fight.

“Triangle theories don’t work in boxing,” Haney said on X. “Rolly will get through my body.”

Former undisputed lightweight champion Haney then further mocked the logic by listing a series of results involving various fighters.

“Rolly got body by Barroso, Barroso got body O’Hara Davies, Davies by Josh Taylor, Taylor by Teo, Teo by Kambosos, everything leads back to ME,” said Haney.

The exchange comes as the two fighters continue talks about a possible unification bout at welterweight. Rolly holds the WBA title, while Haney holds the WBO belt, creating the potential for a two-belt fight if negotiations are finalized.

A fight between the two champions has been discussed for later this year, although neither side has confirmed that a contract has been finalised.

Devin will likely enter the fight as the clear favorite against Rolly (17-2, 13 KOs), who moved up to welterweight after competing at lighter weights earlier in his career.

Romero defeated Ryan Garcia by a 12-round unanimous decision on May 2, 2025, a result that increased attention around potential fights at welterweight. The fight took place in New York and was one of the biggest wins of Romero’s career.

He hasn’t fought since that win as he explores possible high-profile fights.

One issue surrounding Romero’s schedule involves his overdue mandatory defense against Shakhram Giyasov. The Uzbek contender was the WBA’s top challenger for a long period of time, but the title fight was neither ordered nor settled.

It remains unclear whether the WBA will allow Romero to move directly to a unification fight with Haney without first meeting Giyasov. Sanctioning bodies sometimes allow champions to postpone mandatory defenses for unification bouts, although no decision has been announced.

Negotiations between Haney and Romero remain ongoing.
