Guimaraes’ injury forces Howe to rethink midfield plans

By Martin Graham

Newcastle United have suffered a serious setback after the club captain Bruno Guimaraes suffered a hamstring problem that is expected to sideline him for several weeks.

The Brazil international was forced off the pitch late on in Tuesday evening’s 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspurjust his second start since returning from a separate ankle complaint.

Speaking shortly after the game, head coach Eddie Howe admitted the midfielder was concerned about the issue, noting that Guimaraes had never had problems with that muscle group.

Medical assessments have now indicated a lengthy absence, creating a huge challenge for the Tyneside outfit.

The numbers underline its influence

While Newcastle have experienced defeats even when Guimaraes has been involved, including last week’s 3-2 reverse against Brentford, the bigger picture highlights his importance.

Since his arrival in February 2022, the Magpies have not managed a single Premier League win in the 10 games he has missed.

With the 26-year-old in the starting line-up, Newcastle’s success rate in the league rises sharply, with wins in just over half of those matches.

The team also averages more points per game, finds the back of the net more often and allows fewer goals when available.

The midfield options have been stretched

Despite the discouraging statistics, Howe’s side must adapt quickly as they begin a demanding run of games with Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round clash against Aston Villa.

For this trip to Villa Park, only Sandro Tonali, Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey are more capable options in the center of midfield.

There is cautious optimism elsewhere, with Joelinton expected to return soon from a groin problem.

In addition, the club is confident that the absence of youngster Lewis Miley, caused by a dead leg, will not be prolonged.
