Grace Kim is the latest Golf’s latest champion – and she claimed her fashionable epic title.
Standing on the highway of the PAR-5 18 in the Highway at Evian Resort, Kim stayed two shots from the direction of Jeeno thitikul. With 190 yards between her and the flag, Kim knew she would need something special to keep her hopes alive for her first great title.
Her next oscillation delivered that necessity – and then some.
With a hybrid in her hand and her ball under her feet, Kim hit a life while her ball jumped just before the pin and then rolled down the slope to the inside of a cup of light eagle to push its score on 14 under.
Kim’s theater was not far from the end, however.
In the first Play off hole, the 24-year-old’s approach found the danger near the green. Once again, it seemed as if the aspirations of her big titles were dependent on a thread. Once again, Kim managed to deliver in the greatest way.
This time, it was her wedge that secured fireworks. With a pure lie in the penalty area, the new Aussie was able to get solid contacts on the ball and dance her chip over the green and the hole for an impossible bird that lasted the play -off.
“I told myself and my cadad, I have nothing else to lose,” Kim said. “That chip, yes, I don’t know. That just happened.”
In the following Play off hole, Kim again entered the clutch. After separating the right road with her car, she withdrew her 4 hybrid from the bag and released another epic approach, this time seeing her ball placed within 15 legs of the cup.
The moments later, Kim addressed the ball and hit the next blow of her life. Never left the Cup center.
“I couldn’t breathe,” Kim said. “I really couldn’t see it. I was how it is dead? Yes. I’m hitting Putt. Nice to go into the hole.”
With victory, Kim becomes the fifth Australian woman who won a major, joining Jan Stephenson, Karie Webb, Hannah Green and Minjee Lee, who claimed her third major title last month in KPMG PGA Championship for Women.
“I started the week saying that the concern is simply doubting my preparation, my work, the work my team introduced,” Kim said. “I really just tried to support myself all four rounds and no doubt I never – I don’t think I’ve shot, and I have ever this week, so that mentality works.”
If it can maintain that mentality, it is likely that it will not be the last time we see Kim to deliver at the most phase.
