Almost 500 reviews for Amazon’s new golf ball.
As the leading authority on golf balls, it’s our job to let you know if the recently released (and then sold out) The Amazon Basics Core Soft Golf Ball is worth your hard earned money.
We already have run a dozen through our Ball Lab to confirm quality is satisfactory. All that’s left is to put them in a robot against the best balls in the industry and see how they stack up.
The only problem? This takes a lot of time. Don’t worry. We started the process last week and will have real Amazon golf ball bot test data for you as soon as we can.
In the meantime, we didn’t want to keep you waiting. So we asked golfers who have already taken Amazon’s new balls for a spin to share their thoughts and real-world reviews. Think like one Amazon review of the Amazon golf ball.
Of course, we used a star rating because that’s what’s popular. We asked golfers to rate the Amazon golf ball on five basic criteria: Distance, Feel, Greenside Spin, Durability and Value.
We also asked players if Amazon’s ball was better than their current ball AND if they were likely to buy it again.
Just under 500 golfers just like you have played with the new ball and shared their honest feedback.
Distance

In terms of distance, the Amazon ball received a 3.5 star rating. As expected, distance was above average according to players who tried the ball, but not quite on par with the more premium options.
“The Amazon balls are definitely stable, but shorter than a tour-level ball, which is to be expected. I hit some Callaway Supersoft and Maxfli Tour X’s to compare. The Maxfli flew farther, the Callaway basically sat next to one of the Core Soft balls,” noted one tester.
feeling

Feel is obviously subjective, but most players agreed that the feel was slightly above average.
“They’re definitely soft in the mouth,” said one golfer.
“The 2-layer design gives you the super soft feel you’d expect from a ball of this type,” mentioned another.
“I like the feel of the ball from the driver, irons and putters. It’s soft(ish) but not like a Wilson DuoSoft marshmallow,” said another golfer.
Green side spin

The lowest rating the golf ball received on Amazon was in the green spin category (2.8 stars). Most who played with it noted that it was significantly less spiny, which is not surprising given its construction.
“Very low spin as the cover is soft and the ball core is even softer,” said one tester.
“From 150 inches, this ball doesn’t spin!” another mentioned.
“They definitely lack spin on the 40yd and inside shots,” griped another tester.
Endurance

How durable is a $1 golf ball? Testers gave the Amazon golf ball a rating of 3.5 stars in the durability category.
“The ball sat in the sand three times during the game. At the end of the game, the ball looked no worse for use. No scratches. Durable cover,” said one golfer who played the ball.
Value

Value is, of course, where the Amazon Golf Ball really shines. With a rating of 4.5 stars, it’s easy to see that this is the criterion that golfers most enjoyed their time with the golf ball on Amazon.
One tester put it this way: “I’d recommend Amazon’s balls for a moderately high hcp golfer who still can’t maximize the technology on tour-level offerings and tends to lose a few balls a round. They’re economical enough that losing a sleeve or so won’t break the bank, or a $40 heart, like losing a ball.”
“For beginners or even 18 and up, I would highly recommend this ball for its value and overall performance, delivering height, distance and tons of swing for the money. A strong start for the brand!” said another.
Two last questions

Most golfers agreed that the Amazon golf ball would not or could not beat their current putter. It goes without saying that this was not unexpected, taking into account data about what our readers tend to play.
But when it comes to the likelihood that they would play it again, the script flips. Almost half of all players who played the Amazon golf ball said they would buy it again.
