Sevilla have recovered a spectacular 1-1 draw against Girona at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, thanks to Kike Salas’ stoppage time equalizer and a missed penalty by Cristhian Stuani.
This League match saw two teams fighting to improve their positions in mid-table. Sevilla, sitting 14th, were looking to break a streak of inconsistent form. They were facing a 12th-placed Girona team, which had shown recent signs of improvement in the league.
The game burst into life just two minutes later. Girona’s Thomas Lemar fired from inside the area, completing a strong attack. Hugo Rincón provided the crucial assist, putting the visitors ahead early with a clinical finish.
Sevilla demanded an immediate response after conceding. They tried to assert their authority, but the game quickly turned into a physical battle. Juanlu Sánchez received an early yellow card for aggression in the 21st minute when the tension was rising.
Girona controlled the tempo a lot after their first goal. They kept Sevilla at bay for much of the half, expertly frustrating the hosts. Both teams struggled to create many clear-cut chances despite some frantic exchanges.
At the break, Sevilla’s coach probably demanded more urgency and precision from his players. The locals needed to find a way to overcome Girona’s strong defence. Girona, on the other hand, aimed to maintain their leadership and defensive form.
The second half began with several substitutions as both teams looked for new momentum. Sevilla’s César Azpilicueta received a yellow card in the 51st minute. Girona’s Claudio Echeverri followed him into the referee’s book just two minutes later.
Sevilla pressed harder as the half wore on, creating more attacking chances. Girona’s defense, however, held firm, thwarting several promising attacks. The home crowd roared their team on, sensing a potential breakthrough.
Just when it looked like Girona would hold on for a valuable away win, Sevilla found their moment. In the 92nd minute, Kike Salas equalized at home and sent the home crowd wild. The defender’s late strike tied the score.
The drama wasn’t there. Girona scored a deep penalty in the 90+8th minute, offering a chance to win. However, Cristhian Stuani stepped forward and missed the shot, he failed to convert and get the three points.
Girona had a significantly higher expected goals (xG) of 2.43 compared to Sevilla’s 0.81. Girona also beat Sevilla 15 to 11, with 6 shots on goal and 3 from Sevilla. Goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos made 5 vital saves for Sevilla.
This thrilling 1-1 draw leaves both teams in similar positions in the League table. Sevilla won a valuable point at home, while Girona will regret Stuani’s missed penalty. Both sides remain locked in the lower middle table.
