Getafe produced a stunning upset, defeating Real Madrid 1-0 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Martín Satriano’s first-half goal and a defiant goalkeeping display from David Soria ensured an unforgettable victory.
Real Madrid went into the match as big favourites, being second in the League with 60 points. Visitors from 14th-placed Getafe faced a daunting challenge at one of the toughest venues in Europe, despite putting in a strong performance.
The game quickly settled into a familiar pattern, with Real Madrid dominating possession. Getafe adopted a solid defensive approach, earning first yellow cards from Kiko Femenia in the 8th minute and Mauro Arambarri in the 35th minute.
Despite Real Madrid’s control, Getafe found a crucial breakthrough. In the 39th minute, Martín Satriano hooked a precise finish, assisted by Arambarri, to give the visitors an advantage against the run of play.
Real Madrid pushed for the equalizer before the break, creating several half chances. However, the resilience of Getafe’s back and compact midfield thwarted their attacking efforts, retaining the narrow advantage.
At the break, Real Madrid faced a major challenge. Carlo Ancelotti’s side needed a tactical change to break down Getafe’s stubborn defense and overcome their inspired goalkeeper.
In the second half, Real Madrid intensified their attacks. Manager Carlo Ancelotti introduced fresh legs in the 55th minute, with T. Pitarch, David Alaba and Trent Alexander-Arnold to spark an offensive surge.
Getafe’s defense remained resolute, absorbing sustained pressure. Goalkeeper David Soria put in a great performance, making seven crucial saves to deny Real Madrid numerous attempts on goal.
As the clock ticked down, frustration grew among the home crowd. The final phase turned into a tense game with a flurry of yellow cards for both teams, including one for Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior in the 90+4th minute.
Real Madrid’s Federico Mastantuono has received a straight red card in the 90th+5th minute for unsportsmanlike conduct. Getafe also ended up with ten men, as A. Liso received a second yellow in the 90+7th minute, with a red card. Despite the late drama, Getafe held firm to secure their monumental win.
The statistics highlighted Real Madrid’s dominance in possession with 77% and a total of 18 shots, 7 of which on goal. However, Getafe’s efficiency was key, converting one of their two shots on goal. Real Madrid’s expected goals (xG) stood at 1.57, while Getafe’s was 0.48, showing the visitors’ clinical advantage.
This shock defeat significantly damages Real Madrid’s La Liga title aspirations, dropping vital points at home. For Getafe, the unexpected three points at the Bernabéu give a big boost to their mid-table campaign.
