Oviedo stunned Celta Vigo at the Estadio Abanca-Balaídos, securing a dominant 3-0 victory after a brace from Federico Viñas.
Going into this game, Celta Vigo sat comfortably in sixth position, hoping to climb the table. Instead, Oviedo arrived struggling for survival in 19th place, desperately needing points to avoid relegation.
The visitors wowed the home crowd almost immediately. Alberto Reina struck in the 4th minute, silencing the stadium early with a composed finish to put his side ahead.
Celta Vigo tried to respond quickly, dominating the ball throughout the half. However, he struggled to break down a resilient Oviedo defense that remained organised.
As the first half drew to a close, disaster struck the home team. Federico Viñas doubled the lead in the 45th minute, giving his side a vital lead before the break.
The Celta de Vigo coaches probably demanded more urgency in the dressing room at half-time. They had 68 percent possession but lacked the cutting edge to overcome the deficit.
The second half started with Celta de Vigo pressing hard to find a way to get back into the game. Their efforts were repeatedly thwarted by goalkeeper Aarón Escandell, who made six crucial saves.
Oviedo remained dangerous on the counterattack, waiting for mistakes. Viñas struck again in the 57th minute to end any hopes of a Celta Vigo comeback.
Cheers rose slightly as the game wore on, with F. Lopez picking up a yellow card for the home side. Oviedo handled the latter stages well, soaking up the pressure and keeping a clean sheet.
The final stats reveal a strange story as Celta Vigo had 68 percent possession and nine shots in total. However, Oviedo proved to be more efficient, finishing with an expected goals-against metric of 1.71 compared to the home side’s 0.91.
This result leaves Oviedo fighting for their lives in the standings. Meanwhile, Celta de Vigo will need to regroup quickly to maintain their position in the standings.
