Scott McTominay’s opener secured a crucial 1-0 win for Napoli against Cagliari.
Napoli secured a vital 1-0 away win against Cagliari at the Unipol Domus on 20 March 2026. Scotland international Scott McTominay’s opener in the second minute was the only difference.
Napoli went into the match in good form, sitting comfortably in third place in Serie A. Cagliari found themselves in a precarious 15th position, desperate for points to avoid relegation.
The match burst into life almost immediately. McTominay made the most of an early chance, guiding a pinpoint shot past goalkeeper Elia Caprile. That gave the visitors a dream start just two minutes later.
After the goal, Napoli asserted their dominance. They controlled possession with 67% of the ball, moving it purposefully up the pitch. CÃ ller struggled to get a significant place in the middle of the field.
Despite the pressure from Napoli, Cagliari’s defense, coordinated by Yerry Mina, remained firm. João Pedro received a yellow card in the 35th minute for holding. Stanislav Lobotka was booked earlier for a foul in the 17th minute.
CÃ ller retreated to the dressing room needing a strong response and a tactical change. Naples, with their precious early advantage, aimed to manage the match and secure the three points.
In the second half, Cagliari tried to get higher up the pitch. However, they consistently lacked the attacking edge to trouble Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić. Cagliari has not had a shot on goal.
Napoli continued to create chances. Matteo Politano was particularly active, having two shots on goal during his 77 minutes on the pitch. CÃ ller Caprile’s goalkeeper made four important saves to keep his team in the competition.
Substitutions marked the latter stages as both teams looked to make an impact. Cagliari added Marco Folorunsho and Antoine Deiola. Napoli introduced Leonardo Spinazzola, Billy Gilmour and Alisson Santos to maintain their slender lead.
As the full day approached, the intensity grew. Mario Olivera was shown a yellow card for Napoli in the 69th minute. Alberto Dossena followed suit for Cagliari in the 94th minute, reflecting a spirited but ultimately frustrated push.
Napoli’s statistical superiority was clear throughout the match. They had 17 shots in total to Cagliari’s 7, and 67% possession. Their expected goals (xG) stood at 1.77, compared to CÃ ller’s scant 0.35.
This hard-fought victory further cemented Napoli’s position in the top three of Serie A, boosting their hopes of European qualification. Cagliari’s fight against relegation continued, with valuable points escaping at home.
