Antony’s first-half strike and a masterful defensive display earned Real Betis a shock 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid.
Real Betis secured an impressive 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid at the Riad Air Metropolitano. Antony’s first-half goal, coupled with an impenetrable defensive display, secured a surprise win for the visitors.
Third-placed Atlético de Madrid were looking to strengthen their challenge for the League title against fifth-placed Real Betis. Diego Simeone’s side went into the match in strong home form. Betis tried to maintain their European push against a historically difficult opponent.
The match began with Atlético de Madrid securing early control, dominating possession in midfield. Real Betis, however, sought to exploit spaces on the counterattack. The tension quickly escalated and led to early fouls.
Atlético’s M. Ruggeri received a yellow card in the 25th minute for a hard tackle. Moments later, Real Betis broke the deadlock. Antony headed home in the 28th minute, clinically converting a chance after an incisive pass from Abdessamad Ezzalzouli.
The goal surprised the home crowd and encouraged Real Betis. Atlético pushed for an immediate equaliser, launching several attacks. However, Betis’ defense held firm for the rest of the half.
At half-time, Atlético de Madrid led by a single goal, despite controlling much of the ball. Manager Diego Simeone probably demanded more incisiveness and urgency from his attacking players. Real Betis, meanwhile, would have thought to absorb the pressure and maintain their disciplined form.
Atlético made three changes at the restart, bringing on Thiago Almada and Julian Álvarez to provide new attacking impetus. They continued to press high up the pitch. His efforts were met with a determined defense.
Another yellow card for Atlético A. Lookman followed a foul in the 56th minute. The home side thought they had equalized in the 74th minute when Diego Llorente found the net. However, VAR intervened, disallowing the goal for offside, dashing Atlético’s hopes.
With time running out, Atlético de Madrid went all out, making more substitutions in attack. Real Betis got new legs to strengthen their backline and midfield. Goalkeeper Álvaro Valles remained a constant barrier.
Atlético de Madrid finished with 65% possession and 10 shots in total, five of which were on target. Real Betis, despite only 35% possession, created better chances, with an expected goals (xG) of 0.92 compared to Atlético’s 0.71. Valles made 5 crucial saves.
This crucial 1-0 win moves Real Betis closer to the European qualification places in La Liga. For Atlético de Madrid, it represents a major setback in their pursuit of the league title, highlighting an uncharacteristic struggle to convert dominance into goals at home.
