AC Milan secured a vital derby victory over league leaders Inter. Pervis Estupiñán’s goal in the first half decided a tense encounter.
AC Milan secured a crucial 1-0 win over city rivals Inter at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Pervis Estupiñán’s clinical strike in the 35th minute proved the difference in a closely contested Derby della Madonnina. This significant result strengthens the race for the Serie A title.
Inter entered the clash in Serie A riding a formidable five-game winning streak. They had a ten-point lead over second-placed AC Milan, who were looking to revive their title challenge. The derby promised high stakes and intense football.
The early stages saw Inter controlling possession, trying to dictate the pace. Nicolò Barella and Henrikh Mkhitaryan tried to unlock the Rossoneri defence. However, Milan remained resolute at the back.
AC Milan absorbed the pressure effectively, finding opportunities on the counter-attack. Youssouf Fofana was instrumental in the midfield transitions. Christian Pulisic also looked sharp on the wing.
The breakthrough came in the 35th minute. Fofana sent a precise pass to Pervis Estupiñán, who found space in the area. Estupiñán beat the Inter goalkeeper with his regular shot and left the home crowd wild. It was a quality moment in a ditched half.
Milan headed into the break with a narrow but deserved lead. Inter needed a tactical rethink to break their determined neighbors. The second half promised a good response from the league leaders.
Inter emerged with renewed vigor after the restart, bringing more players forward. Their possession increased greatly, but Milan’s defense held firm. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan made a crucial save early on to deny a long-range effort.
Both coaches turned to their benches to influence the game. Inter made a double change in the 59th minute, entering Petar Sučić and Luis Henrique. Milan responded in the 73rd minute, bringing on Niclas Füllkrug and Samuele Ricci.
The intensity of the derby led to a flurry of yellow cards. Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni and Denzel Dumfries were quickly booked around the 65th minute. Milan’s Adrien Rabiot and Luka Modrić also saw yellow late in the game, reflecting the final tense moments.
Although Inter dominated possession with 63% and generated an Expected Goals (xG) figure of 1.18, they managed just two shots on target. AC Milan, with just 37% possession and an xG of 0.77, equaled both of Inter’s shots on goal, converting one. Maignan’s two saves were instrumental in preserving Milan’s goal.
This hard-fought win closes the gap at the top of Serie A to seven points. AC Milan dealt a major blow to Inter’s title procession, showing that the Scudetto race is far from over. It gives the Rossoneri renewed hope for the final stretch of the season.
