Coach Greg Hackett says the December 14th contest between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach is a “good fight.” He points out that many casual boxing fans don’t know Roach (25-1-1, 15 KOs) because they haven’t followed the sport closely enough to become familiar with him.
Hackett says what Roach lacks is the “flare” that other fighters like Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney have because he has a “relaxed” type of personality. He hasn’t had the same opportunities to get the notable fights. Roach does hold the WBA super featherweight title after beating Hector Garcia last year, but the fight went under the radar of fans.
Tank Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) will defend his WBA lightweight title against Roach on December 14 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The event will be shown on PBC Amazon Prime Video. It is still unclear if it will be on PPV and who will be on the undercard. All that information will be released soon.
“For the people who know Lamont and for the people who know boxing and are there, it’s a good fight,” trainer Greg Hackett said. YSM Sports Mediatalking about the Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach fight on December 14th. “What’s missing is that flair. Lamont is not that type of guy. He is a gentleman; he is relaxed.
“Lamont is the type of guy who wants that even if he tries to intimidate you, you wouldn’t be completely intimidated because his eyes are green, a light boy. He doesn’t look like a super mean bull.
“Tank has the tattoos, and his eyes are a little down. He looks crazy like there is something wrong with him. He has the braids, and he’s going to put a lot of extra (stuff) into it. He’s going to come in with an outfit and all that. So, Tank comes with flair.
“Lamont is just a nice bull, but he can fight, and he’s a champion. We must respect him as such. The problem is we are always looking for hype. We always look for great fights when it’s honestly a good fight.
“Lamont Roach knows Tank Davis. Tank Davis knows Lamont Roach. It’s a local fight and it’s big for their part of town for the DMV. It is massive. They both fought Hector Garcia. The reason I brought this up is because of the level of boxing.
“Tank only fought him a year and a half ago, Hector Garcia. So it’s the same level of boxing,” Hackett said of Tank and Roach who both fought Hector Garcia. “So how can we say Tank is (cherry) picking when this guy (Roach) has a title? They have a history and know each other.
“The only thing missing is that torch, like a Ryan Garcia or Devin Haney. They’ve got the flair on them because the spotlight has been on them for a few years.
“A guy like Lamont, he crawls through the cracks. “Where does he come from?” It’s for people who just started watching boxing. I have been looking at Lamong Roach for a while. They used to come to Philly to box. So, I’ve seen Lamont Roach a bunch of times.” Hackett said.
