The PGA Tour’s second signature event wraps up on Sunday — and with it, a boatload of cash will be handed out to the top finishers.
For 54 hole leader Jacob Bridgemanit could be a really important day. The 26-year-old shot rounds of 64 on the beastly Riviera on Friday and Saturday to open up a six-shot lead. The Clemson alum has never won on the PGA Tour, but kicked his game into gear last year, when he posted nine top-25 finishes in 30 events.
Now, Bridgeman is on the verge of his first Tour victory – but first he will have to face a formidable opponent.
Bridgeman will play alongside his closest competitor in Sunday’s final pairing: Rory McIlroyWorld No. 2, newly minted career Grand Slam winner and owner of 29 PGA Tour victories.
“I know he’s going to play well tomorrow,” Bridgeman said of McIlroy after his round on Saturday. “I know I can’t do support at all. But I think I feel comfortable.”
Besides a legacy-building win at Riv, there’s also a sweet payday. Bridgeman has won $6.9 million in 65 career events so far. On Sunday, he’ll have a chance to take home a $4 million winner’s check from a $20 million purse. Second place will receive $2.2 million, with seven figures to be awarded up to fourth place.
