Gambhir dismissed the criticism saying that such comments only tarnish the monumental achievements of players who have brought glory to the nation.

After being defeated New Zealand Several members of the Indian contingent in the final of the tournament, including ICC chairman Gambhir Jay Shahand captain Suryakumar Yadavvisited the Hanuman temple in Ahmedabad with the trophy. Kirti Azad questions the temple visit after winning the World Cup

The controversy began when Azad, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, expressed dismay at the symbolic act of visiting the temple immediately after winning the title. According to him, since the cup was not taken to other religious places, such a gesture raised questions about inclusiveness.

Azad argued that a national achievement like a World Cup victory represents every citizen of the country, regardless of faith, and therefore the celebrations should reflect this broad sentiment. His remarks quickly sparked debate among fans and cricket followers on social media platforms.

Gautam Gambhir criticizes Azad for his remarks about Team India

Gambhir did not hold back when approached for comments. The Indian coach said the criticism was not even worth responding to and insisted the focus should continue on celebrating the players’ efforts. According to Gambhir, having such discussions immediately after a major sporting victory distracts from the dedication and sacrifice shown by the players throughout the tournament.

He emphasized that India’s victory is a proud moment for the entire country and should be celebrated without unnecessary controversy. Gambhir also emphasized that any statement that takes the conversation away from the achievements of the players risks diminishing the value of what they have achieved on the global stage.

“It’s not even worth answering this question. If you answer this question, it’s a big moment for the whole country. If you ask me, it’s a big moment for our whole country. I think it’s important that we celebrate the winner of the World Cup. That’s why I said certain statements; it’s pointless to collect certain statements because these statements will only weaken the efforts of the players to diminish your achievements. tomorrow anyone can make any statement and we start to take it seriously, fair to these guys not”. Gambhir told ANI.

Gambhir further highlighted the immense pressure the team was under during the tournament. He pointed out that the players faced intense scrutiny throughout the competition, especially after suffering a defeat early in the campaign.

Despite the odds, the squad managed to regroup and produce a remarkable run that eventually lifted the trophy. Gambhir argued that instead of celebrating that resilience, criticisms like Azad’s were overshadowing the team’s hard work.

“Imagine what the boys have been through – the pressure they’re under after losing a match in South Africa, the pressure the boys are under. If you make a statement like that today, you’re literally demeaning your players and you’re demeaning your team, it can’t be done.” Gambhir added.
