When it comes to ranking, only one number matters to Coco gafff: No.1.
After its 6-1, 6-1 over victory over IgA swiatek On Thursday in Madrid, Guff told reporters that she is not worried about the ranking she will hold behind after the Madrid final.
“I will be honest. It’s not important to me, honestly,” Gufff said, adding: “The only number that meant a lot to me is 1 at this point. Everyone else is right, it’s just a number. Ovousy is a reward for the work I’m doing and the consistency I’m showing, but it’s not something I think or I have a purpose.”
For those who care about such things, Gauff can pass Swiatek in the ranking if she defeats Aryna Sabalenka in the Madrid final of Saturday.

Gauff has taken the power again from late swiatek. After losing the first seven matches of their rivalry, she has now won four of the last eight and three in a row.
“I can’t believe we’ve played each other this many times,” she said. “I’m 21 and I think she is 23. We’re so young, and we both at least have, I would say, 10 more years in this game.
“So I will not be surprised if we … we end up having the record for most cases playing against one another ever in the history of tennis honestly at this point.”
In the past, the American was a victim of its nerves and expectations when faced with Swiatek. These days she says she is not overturning things.
“I think in the past I’ve almost called a lot in where I just made so much pressure on myself,” she said. “Now I just feel like, whatever. It is like, if I win, excellent, I get another victory aboard that head -to -head, and if you lose it is just another loss.
“I just try to make sure that when I play it. If I lose. That’s because it won the game and not because I lost the game myself.”
