Gary Russell Jr says he wants Floyd Schofield Jr next, but his timing raises questions. Russell responded on social media after hearing comments from Schofield’s father claiming he dodged the fight. The former WBC featherweight titleholder pushed back on that version of events and issued a direct appeal.
“I just got on the Internet, and they said a little bit that Schofield’s dad said we ducked him,” Russell Jr. said. said on X. “Don’t make it look like you didn’t get an answer from me. I want your son now.”
It’s hard to take a Gary Russell Jr. shoutout at face value these days. While his talent was never the problem, his schedule was. Since 2019, he’s basically been the Loch Ness monster of the featherweight division. Rumors exist, sometimes spotted, but mostly just a legend that people talk about.
Gary Russell Jr. transitioned from being a “featherweight king on a part-time schedule” to essentially being the veteran mentor/brother of Gary Antuanne Russell. The name brand has faded considerably.
If Floyd Schofield Jr. take this battle and win, the narrative is already written. Russell will be 38 by the time they probably meet. Going from 126 to 135 is a massive jump for a guy who was already fighting once every 24 months, and with no tune-up.
Beating a guy who fought once (against Hugo Castaneda) in four years doesn’t prove that Schofield is ready for Tank or Shakur. If Schofield struggles at all, critics will say he couldn’t even dominate a “washed-up” featherweight, and it will hurt his brand.
The win over Castaneda last year was supposed to be the “busy” fight for Russell Jr, but here we are a year later with no follow up. The lack of urgency is exactly why fans checked out. Russell’s technical brilliance is a memory at this point, not a present threat.
There is almost no benefit to a young prospect trying to build a legitimate resume at lightweight. Schofield is better off looking for a top 10 lightweight that actually brings a ranking or a belt to the table. To join Russell Jr. in 2026 to fight feels like a throwback to an era that has already passed him by.
