Gabby Thomas, 2024 Olympic champion, 200 meters, talks to RunBlogRun (Archive, 2023)

Gabby Thomas had an incredible 2024.

Gabby dominated the 200 meters with her stunning win at the Olympics.

In Paris, Gabby Thomas didn’t put a foot wrong, winning her rounds, running a fine 21.87 to win her first individual gold medal in the 200m.

Gabby Thomas, coached by one of our sport’s most underrated coaches, Tonya Buford-Bailey (who shared the 400m WR hurdles), won gold in the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay in Paris.

Gabby Thomas is brilliant on and off the track. An NCAA champion from Harvard, Gabby just completed her Masters in Health Care Administration at the University of Austin. While Gabby completed her master’s degree and completed full-time training, Gabby Thomas volunteered at two clinics, helping underserved ethnic minorities who were terrified of our health care system get the health care they deserve. Clear, thoughtful, and always cheerful, Gabby Thomas is one of my absolute favorite interviews year after year. He is a person for others and we need more people like him in this modern, complex, balkanized world.

Gabby Thomas will end her season at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island on Thursday, September 26, 2024, for a long time. We wish him well.

This is from our Archives.

This is an interview with Gabby Thomas, who won Olympic bronze, world champs silver in the 200m and won the OK 4x100m relay. The interview was held on March 8-9, 2023.

Gabby Thomas, RunBlogRun Interview 2023

Gabby Thomas is one of the most impressive sprinters in American track and field.

Gabby Thomas is also an outstanding athlete to interview. We did this interview at the March 2023 Business and Athlete World Conference on Athletics and Marketing.

It is one of the most critical weeks of the year. GAM provides media access for nearly three dozen of its athletes. These are some of my favorite interviews because we spend 25-30 minutes with an athlete, their past year and where they want to go in the current year.

Gabby Thomas shocked a lot of people in 2021 by finishing 4th in the 100m in 11.17 and then dominating the 200m in 21.61. The 200 meters was run on 21 June 2021 and was the #2 performance at the time, behind only Florence Griffith Joyner’s WR.

In Tokyo 2021, Gabby won bronze in the 200 meters and then anchored the USA team to a silver medal in the 4x100m relay.

2022 was a difficult year. Gabby ran a wind-assisted 21.69 200m and 10.92 100m in 45 minutes. Gabby then tore her hamstring and missed the World Championships qualifying mark, finishing 8th in the 200m.

The interview was fun. Gabby enjoyed the process and spoke about her training with Tonya Buford-Bailey, her return to fitness, indoor racing and her plans for 2023.

Gabby Thomas won the US 200m title on July 9, 2023. In Budapest, Gabby Thomas won silver in the 200m in 21.81, then anchored the 4x100m relay to win gold for Team USA in 41.03.

Gabby Thomas’ PBs are 100 meters at 11.00 (Eugene, 2021), 200 meters at 21.60 (Eugene, 2023) and 400 meters at 49.68 (Austin, 2023).
