The WBC junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora has reportedly sustained a left-hand injury, which led to his title defense against Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman on October 25 to be postponed.
Injuries hit the “magic inferno”
‘The Towering Inferno’ Fundora (23-1-1, 15 COs) is a Southpaw, so a left-hand injury would affect him much more than if it was right.
The entire PPV card knocked off the schedule
The entire map, which includes a world title fight between WBC Super Featherweight Champion O’Shaqui Foster and Stephen Fulton, will be rescheduled with the Fundora-Thurman struggle.
Mike Coppinger broke the disappointing news about X today. It’s a little surprise that it was the 27-year-old fundora who sustained the injury rather than Thurman, who has a long history of injury problems dating from 2016.
Last year, Keith broke while training for a world title against the then WBO 154 pound champion Tim Tszyu, which was scheduled on March 30, 2024. Fundora entered a late replacement and defeated Tszyu by a 12-round decision.
$ 74.99 ppv: Too expensive for a replacement
Wood’s take: With the sale of the opportunity for $ 74.99 on Amazon Prime Video-pay-pervention, it makes sense that it is moved. For that kind of money, it would not have worked that a replacement was unearthed at the last minute and was unearthed as the substitute for the soon 37-year-old Thurman (31-1, 23 COs).
In addition, the risk of Thurman lost would have been great. He was injured in the first round of his last fight against the second level Brock Jarvis earlier this year on March 12. The performance has shown that it is not a good idea to take any chances with the outdated, ring-giants ‘one-time’.
It is very risky to match Thurman against almost any top -15 contender for junior middleweight. It is better to save him for Fundora. It would be a disaster if Keith was destroyed by one of the conters to the lower level brought in as a substitute to save the October 25 battle date.
Fan -Reaction: Shoulders and Frustration
Interestingly, the reaction of fans on social media was mixed, with some disappointment and a lot of indifference. The Fundora-Thurman struggle did not create the spark that some people thought.
This is understandable, as Thurman has been too inactive since 2017 to maintain his popularity. Younger fans have never seen him before and are not excited about this game.
Many of them consider Thurman as an old fossil from the dinosaur era, not as someone from another era. Many of them do not know who Keith is and see him as a man who talks a lot about the old days in his YouTube interviews. He makes many memories, and younger fans cannot make contact.
It is still too early to know if the opportunity for the same venue will be rescheduled at the MGM Grand, Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas.
