Matteo Berrettini did everything in his power to deny Taylor Fritz from reaching its first semifinal in Miami. In the end it was not enough.
The Italian saved six matches in a second dramatic set to force Fritz in a crucial group, but he was eventually restored again by the American fourth, 7-5 6-7 (7) 7-5.

There will be no nightmare tonight for the 27-year-old, who will face Czechekia’s Jakub Mental Jakub for a place in the final Friday in Miami.
“There are two options. Dig it, lose it and then be even more frustrated for all the chances I have exploded, or reorganized and win,” Fritz said. “Now I can sleep tonight and not be so angry with the chances I have exploded.”

Fritz improves in life 5-0 against Berrettini, thanks to three resting conversions, including one for 6-5 in the final group.
The American is in his sixth semifinals of the 1000 masters, and he is one of the only 12 American men who have reached at least semi -finals in both Wells and the Indian Miami since 1985.
