Friday night at Ryder Cup, which means we are eight matches in this three-day extravaganza, 28 games. Europe opened a lead 5.5 to 2.5 on day 1, which means we are collecting our writer’s round table to ask: Who gets credit?!
1. One day inside, who is the hero of this Ryder Cup? Here is the capture: there are no repeated names.
Sean Zak, elderly writer (@sean_zak) :: It is quiet one ahead, which no one is talking about: Jon Rahm. People forget that Rahm lost the first two matches of his Ryder Cup career, again in Paris in 2018. He is 8-1-3 since, with his only loss to Scottie Scheffler in Whistling Straits Singles. He has now faced Scheffler six times in the last three cups and has a winning record against… the best player since Tiger Woods? Rahm did not get the love he deserved in Rome and I’m afraid he may not get it again.
James Colgan, the editor of news and features (@Jamescolgan26) :: I was not surprised by Ryder Cup I Rory Mcilroy on Friday. I was not surprised by Jon Rahm, neither. But I’m not sure I have properly calculated Tommy Fleetwood. He is playing the best golf of his life, and I’m not sure I have ever seen him play better in any environment than in his 36 holes on Friday, caught with a 3 -legged approach to 18.
Dylan Dothier, old writer (@dylan_Dethier) :: It’s Rory Mcilroy. He lost the winning blow to the match on Friday evening, but he did everything until then, beating the doors by Europeans in the morning and hanging inside a delightful crowd and a Patrick Cantlay accusing down the stretch-including his Birdie Drops on 16 and 17. his combined team. Rory has been open to what this event means. Now he is giving up.
Alan Bastable, Executive Editor (@alan_bastable) :: Surely Luke Donald deserves a knot. He was one (some?) Step before the Americans in Rome, and it seems he is here again in Long Island. I do not know if he rises to the status of the “hero”, but also gives Cameron Young, who tried with a seemingly off -shaped Justin Thomas in the afternoon and steam of Aberg and Hoygaard. It makes you wonder if young – with his roots in New York and all his experience in Bethpage – Musta played twice today.
Looking forward to the next Ryder Cup locations
2 and one day inside, who is this biggest girlfriend of the Ryder Cup? Again, no repetition.
Colgan: Uh, is Scottie Scheffler. The best player from both sides went 0-2-0 on Friday, continuing a range of surprisingly weak games in team matches. At one point he would go 18 straight holes of the match without a single bird. In this golf course? In these conditions? To borrow from the local parliament, forget it! Two weeks ago, Scheffler ended a range of twenty -one straight rounds under the money. Americans need more from no. 1 of them if they will stay a chance on the weekend. (Although I will admit that I was encouraged by the back-back birds to close things!)
Zakth: James is right, but no repetition! So I will get his morning teammate Russell Henley, who can be a Ryder Cup novice, but is the number 3 player in the world. He has been one of the top six players on the planet for the last 12 months. And he was shocked by the scene. He crashed and did not give Scheffler much to work with him. American horses should be horses. They are not now.
alacrity: Bethpage Black as a Golf Course for Games was more or less loved. I dunno, man – had only zero fire in this place. It was wet, which is undoubtedly out of control of tournaments. But I didn’t feel like players to face a lot of danger. The approximation is so short and the green are so soft that there is very little punishment for a Miss, which meant that there was a lot of arrows and then a bunch of matches turned into setting competitions. Europeans made almost zero bogeys in four! Credit to them. I just wanted something more convincing.
basic: First experience of tee. Don’t make me wrong, the hulking stands were packaged and vivid on Friday morning, but the horizontal structure – which extends from the 18th back of the 18th to the first to the first – lacks a certain intimacy and cohesion. When he came to cheer and have fun, half of the stands did not seem to know what the other half was doing. I miss the vibe colosseum created by the wrapping stands we have seen in the past Ryder cups.
3 You suddenly called to the captain’s room. Seed are you telling Keegan Bradley and US leadership?
Zakth: I tell Keegan that it is okay for players not to play three games. Everyone took their feet wet on Friday. They don’t have to play on Saturday. Xander Schauffle should not be seated. Harris English does not have to return there on Saturday. Now you are in the Junkyard dog mode. Every half point matters.
Colgan: I’ll be a little more specific: I’m telling Keegan who Collin Morikawa and Harris English can sit until you look at a more competitive tour. Those boys were completely overloaded on Friday.
alacrity: Do you not even think of a second about lowering Cameron Young another session. Also check the bylaws to see if the captain can Article yourself.
basic: I don’t know. I would think I would tell Keegan to say something about his team like, “excellent moments arise from a great opportunity. And that’s what you have here on Saturday, boys. That’s what you won here. If we were to play ’10 times, they can win nine. But not tomorrow, we play Golf with ‘ Because we can!
4. Tell me one interesting thing you’ve seen or heard on the course on Friday.
Zakth: A couple of sports psychology for the American team will see boys outside on Saturday morning, then fly to Athens for the Alabama-Georgia game, as they both work with those football teams, too. Then they will fly back to Long Island on Saturday evening to help prepare boys for Sunday bachelors. This is a helluva weekend.
Colgan: I have witnessed the most submissive Bryson Dechambeau I have seen in a large golf environment in two years! Of course, he was still Bryson, but I was surprised to see how little time spent playing in the crowd. I think we should see more from showman if we hope this is near Sunday.
alacrity: Rory got so far the greatest grief of every player – fans were cheering “f – You, Rory!” Pre-7 am-but until the end of the afternoon seemed to attract the force from it. We can study strokes hit by hitting by shock But he did not miss a blow down the alignment.
basic: The military sniper in the booth after 18 Green threw the jaw. Sharpshooter was part of Trump’s security team, but still, seeing him riding there with a rifle resting on a tripod was not something I expected to see so close to action.
