Ethiopians celebrated victories in Germany on Sunday with Britain’s Abbey Donnelly clocking a PB of 2:24:11.
Bouze Diriba won the women’s race in 2:19:34 at the Frankfurt Marathon in Mainova despite strong winds, as Ethiopia’s Belai Asfau surprisingly won the men’s race in 2:06:16.
Meanwhile, Abbey Donnelly moved into 7th place in the UK all-time rankings with 2:24:11 as she improved on her best of 2:26:21 set on her debut in Rotterdam earlier this year.
The only British woman to have run faster this year is Kali Hauger-Tuckery, with Donnelly’s time slightly faster than the 2:24:25 that Eilish McColgan ran when completing the first British home in London in April.
In the women’s race in Frankfurt, Kenya’s Magdaline Masai and Sharon Chelimo finished second and third in 2:20:23 and 2:20:29 respectively.

In the men’s race, Taresa Bekuma finished runner-up in 2:07:01, while third-placed Shura Kitata, the 2017 winner, made it onto the Ethiopian podium in 2:07:02.
A record number of 17,000 participants was registered in the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon. Including shorter distance events, the total entry was 30,407 runners.
