Greg McElroy won the 2010 BCS National Championship as quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He then played a few seasons in the NFL before hanging up his cleats.
Now, McElroy is one of ESPN’s top college football commentators and analysts. He is also a 4.7 handicap with dreams of getting even better. McElroy was a guest on the latest episode of GOLF’s subparagraph podcast and discussed his golf game and goals with co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz.
Like many elite athletes, McElroy has moments where he believes he can be good at golf. But like many others, the game quickly humbles him.
“I have moments where I’m like, ‘I could be good,'” McElroy said. “And then I have a quick reminder that when I pull something, I either three-putt it or I put it off the green and I’m like, ‘I’m never going to be good.’ I’m kind of at the point now where I’m probably as good as I’ll ever be, although I still have aspirations in the back of my mind to become a handicap plus. I don’t think I’ll ever get there – I’m too stubborn. But at some point, I’d like to make that goal a reality.”

McElroy is currently working with senior swing coach Mark Blackburn, but admits the famed instructor understands the former signal caller has a simple view of the game.
“He’ll say, ‘load the club Greg, rest it,'” McElroy said. “And I’m like, ‘I don’t know what that means. And he’s like, ’45, 46 degrees, Greg.’ Like Mark, let me rock hard. And he’s finally now to the point now where he’s like this guy has no idea what he’s doing. He will swing hard. He’s going to be a smartass about it. He’s strong, so we’ll figure it out. He has good speed, but he probably won’t know where he’s going. So when it comes to face control in the club, it’s so overrated in my opinion. Just, see the ball, hit the ball. That’s what it’s all about.”
