Floyd Schofield stands on Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz in the co-function at the Vergil Ortiz Jr. Against Erickson Lubin Card on November 8 on Dazn in the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
A fan-friendly co-function
This is a battle that fans consider an important retirement for Schofield of his last competition against Tevin Farmer on June 28. Golden Boy’s Team, of promoter Oscar de la Hoyaa and Eric Gomez, probably selected the former IBF Super Featherweight Champion Diaz 34-8-1, 15 COs) because of his fan-friendly style, hoping that the fight will be just as exciting as his last one against August 2.
#1 WBA and #3 IBF lightweight contender Schofield (23) is still young enough to move slowly through Golden Boy. But at some point they will have to stand up to one of the world champions, because he wastes his best years that the opposition has encountered too much.
Diaz’s worrying recent record
Schofield’s first round of the former IBF champion farmer of 130 pounds in June must have been a sign that he is ready to start fighting against high-level fighters. Therefore, it is surprising that Golden Boy has chosen to fit him against Diaz, who has lost seven of his last nine fights. This is a record of 2-7 for ‘Jo Jo’ Diaz since 2021.
Schofield had the opportunity to challenge the WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson earlier this year on February 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. However, four days before the fight, Schofield suddenly pulled out on February 18 due to illness.
The cost of a canceled fight
This was a missed opportunity, because with his hand speed and punching, he would have had a good chance to upset Shakur. There was no interest from Stevenson to give Schofield a second chance to try to fight against him. And after the way he wiped out the farmer in the first round, Schofield may never have received a voluntary title against Shakur. He will have to work to a mandatory place.
