Floyd Schofield and Rene Tellez Giron weighed in at 134.4 pounds at Friday’s weigh-in for their 12-round lightweight contest in the main event on DAZN this Saturday, November 2. Schofield (17-0, 12 KOs) continues to push for a world title shot.

Golden Boy Promotions gives Schofield a guy who will test his skills with his bout against the 25-year-old (20-3, 13 KOs). They want to make sure he’s ready when he does get a world title shot, as he struggled in his fight against Haskell Rhodes in July 2023. Schofield was hurt in that fight, and he had to reach deep to earn a ten-round decision pick up win.

Giron (25) has three defeats, but he has won his recent fights and will be confident against the easy-to-hit Scholfield on Saturday night. If the 22-year-old Schofield fights like he did against Rhodes, Giron has a good chance to win.
“I think he will get a good test in this fight from Rene Tellez Giron. Three losses and now have a winning streak. He’s got some good wins,” said commentator Chris Mannix DAZN Boxing about Giron.
“Golden Boy invests a lot in Schofield, but they also test him. That’s what Golden Boy does. They are one of the best matchups in the game. It’s sink or swim with them,” said Sergio Mora. “Schofield has the better hand and athleticism, but he does get hit because he likes to mix it up.
“If he mixes it up with Giron, it’s going to be a longer night than expected. I favor Schofield in this fight because I feel he has learned from his past ways. His Haskell Rhodes fight was rougher than expected. So, he knows not to go into those types of fights, especially against a Mexican style that wants to make it that type of fight,” Mora said.
Giron will have seen the Rhodes fight and will put the same kind of pressure on Schofield that he did. He may not be as big of a puncher as Rhodes, but that may not matter.
“If he’s going to lure the young buck into a fight, fans are going to be in for a big treat, but Schofield could have an upset if he does. Schofield is not a name. He must be in these great battles. He got the main event after Vergil Ortiz couldn’t get that main event.”
If Schofield loses this fight, it’s going to be a long road back to the top because he’s going to need a lot of work for him to climb back up to the #2 spot with the WBA. If it wasn’t for the Haskell Rhodes fight, it would be seen as a decisive victory for Schofield. The Rhodes fight showed that Schofield is still flawed and not yet ready for a world title shot.
“He shone in a fight where he was cut; it was exciting, and he was floored. Now he is the main event, but now he has to be a little more careful. He knows it’s the perfect style matchup, but it’s sink or swim,” Mora said.
The only reason he’s in the main event is because Vergil Jr. is not ready to go after his grueling fight against Serhii Bohachuk. Schofield needs to prove he deserves to draft future cards by making easy work of Giron.
