Pederson sat Pete in the seat next to him on the plane and, once in the air, continued to have several other cocktails in the flight home.
This is when fate and a stewardess (hey, this is what they were called in 1955) intervened.
Pete loses his head but earns the immortality of the logo
Pederson may have riding the plane without feeling pain, but he apparently became good and was snacked once in the air. How much snackered? At one point during the flight, he accidentally overthrew the poor head of Pete.
Stewardes (the official history of the penguin describes it as “seductive”) helped Pederson find Pete’s head. She then took off her tie and used her to tie the head of Pete back into his body. Seeing Pete, she joked that since he looked so weak in her tie, perhaps Munsingwear had to put her with a shirt.
Penguin actually made a video of the story.
