This week in Lima, the capital of Peru, the best young athletes on the planet are fighting for medals.
Australian Relay Champions – Australia took first place in the 4x400m medley on the first day of the U20 World Championships in Lima, Peru. Jordan Gilbert, Bella Pasquali, Jack Deguara and Sofia Gregoriewicz clocked 3:19.27 ahead of Poland and China.
Eisa dominates 5000m – Medina Eissa broke the women’s 5000m championship record with a time of 14:39.71. The Ethiopian edged compatriot Genzebe Dibaba’s mark by 28 seconds, with another Ethiopian, Mekedes Alemeshete, finishing second.
“I’m very happy with this win and to get a championship record after the Olympics,” said Eisa, who finished seventh in the 5,000m at the Olympics earlier this month. “I wanted to become champion, I wanted it for months.”
Britain’s Lizzie Wellstead finished 12th in 16:21.50.
Dutch joy in shooting – Jarno van Daalen of the Netherlands won the men’s shot put title with a PB of 20.76m.
South African Jay L. van Rensburg threw 20.74m for the silver medal and Germany’s Georg Harpf won the bronze medal with 20.28m. Favorite Yannick Rolvink, also from Holland, was fifth.
Wedderburn-Goodison are in good form – British sprint talent Nia Wedderburn-Goodison was the fastest qualifier in the women’s 100m semi-final along with Barbados’ Kisauna Niles as both athletes clocked 11.39.
“I can’t wait for the final,” said Wedderburn-Goodison. “I am very happy to be in the final this time than two years ago.”
Men’s 5000m Burn – The men’s 5000m saw a massive sprint for the medals as Kenya’s Andrew Kipto Alamisi cruised to victory in 13:41.14. Ethiopia’s Abdisa Fayisa finished second in 13:41.56, while Uganda’s Kenneth Kiprop took bronze in 13:41.73.
