FC Porto cruised to a 2-0 win over VfB Stuttgart in their UEFA Europa League clash, with goalkeeper Diogo Costa playing a pivotal role in the win.
The Portuguese giants entered with formidable momentum, aiming to continue their strong European campaign. They faced a spirited VfB Stuttgart side, who looked to make an impact away from home.
The match at the Estádio do Dragão started with immediate intensity. P. Rosario del Porto received a yellow card only in the seventh minute for a rough game.
Despite the early booking, Porto quickly found their rhythm. William Gomes broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, guiding a precise finish past the Stuttgart goalkeeper. Borja Sainz provided the crucial assist and put the hosts ahead.
More yellow cards followed for Porto. Zaidu was booked in the 23rd minute, with R. Mora following just two minutes later for a foul.
E. Demirovic of Stuttgart also saw yellow in the 35th minute for holding on. This highlighted the harsh nature of the first part.
At the break, Porto had a valuable but slim lead. Stuttgart, despite enjoying more possession, had been unable to really test Diogo Costa. The visitors needed a tactical change to find an equaliser.
The second half started with both teams making tactical substitutions. Stuttgart pushed forward, desperate for a breakthrough, and increased the attacking pressure. Porto, however, remained resolute defensively.
Porto then doubled their lead in the 72nd minute. Victor Froholdt, who had come on at half-time, scored to make it 2-0. His goal provided a crucial cushion for the hosts.
Stuttgart’s challenge became much more difficult soon after. N. Nartey received a second booking in the 77th minute for fouling, which resulted in a red card. Stuttgart were forced to play the rest of the game with ten men.
Playing with a numerical disadvantage, Stuttgart struggled to mount a serious comeback. Porto comfortably controlled the latter stages, defending their two-goal advantage with discipline. L. Assignon was shown a yellow card late on, reflecting Stuttgart’s growing frustration.
Statistically, Stuttgart dominated possession with 64% and recorded a total of 20 shots, with 6 on target. Porto, however, were efficient, converting 2 goals with only 9 shots and 4 on target. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa proved impenetrable, making 6 vital saves against Stuttgart’s 1.55 xG.
This 2-0 home win gives FC Porto a considerable advantage heading into the second leg of their UEFA Europa League tie. VfB Stuttgart now face a daunting task to overturn the deficit and progress in the competition.
