On Friday night, November 15, Most Valuable Promotions hosted a big event at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, when 27-year-old YouTuber boxer Jake Paul defeated former two-time world heavyweight champion ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson by unanimous decision.
The strategic execution regarding the build-up and marketing of this fight was effective. Millions of fans tuned into Netflix hoping to see a vintage ferocious Mike Tyson, but instead they saw a way past his premier boxer struggling to go the distance.
The Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul clash was initially set to take place on July 20, but two months before the fight, Tyson experienced a health problem. Tyson flared up an ulcer during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles.
Tyson experienced nausea, he was light-headed and he vomited blood in the plane’s bathroom. After being treated at the hospital, Tyson’s doctor advised him to take a few weeks off training. Due to Tyson’s ulcer flare-up, his fight against Jake Paul was postponed and rescheduled for November 15.
When Mike Tyson resumed his training, the red flags popped up, but the hardcore Tyson fans ignored them. For example, instead of posting extended clips of Tyson’s training, his team will post small snippets of the workouts.
This did not sit well with the group of people who were critical of the Tyson vs Paul fight as they wanted to watch an extended video to get an idea of the 58-year-old Tyson’s stamina level. Another troublesome red flag was the absence of sparring.
Again, the critics of the Tyson vs Paul fight wanted to see Tyson spar and see how he reacts to an active opponent in front of him. The Tyson sparring video appeared a week before the fight, but in the video, Tyson’s sparring partner did not attempt to throw a punch.
On fight night, the anticipation level was high as celebrities and a host of boxing fans filed into AT&T Stadium. Back in his prime when Mike Tyson walked to the ring it was an intimidating sight, but on the night of November 15th when Tyson walked to the ring it gave off grandpa vibes.
Despite the fact that the ring walking looked different, it felt like 1988 when Tyson entered the ring, but after the 1st round, fight fans quickly realized that it was 2024. .
Once Tyson got inside, Jake Paul continued to grab and grab. As the referee separated the two fighters, Paul used his jab while circling the ring. Later in the opening round, fight fans got excited when Tyson landed a left-right combination.
As the match continued, Jake Paul controlled the fight with movement, using his jab and throwing the occasional right hand. In Mike Tyson’s mind, he wanted to take the fight to Paul, but his body failed him. Tyson stood on tired legs, and as a result the 58-year-old was unable to close the distance.
A stunned crowd at AT&T Stadium watched as they saw the iconic Mike Tyson inside the ring, looking like a shell of his former self. Meanwhile, Jake Paul continued to execute his game plan, cruising to a unanimous decision victory.
After the fight, numerous celebrities aired their opinion on social media. Some questioned why the fight was allowed to happen, and others held anger towards Jake Paul. WBA world lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis posted:
“To the bozo who shared the ring with Mike.. you a whole bozo for this, and you didn’t do the job with your head…”
Mike Tyson will always be an iconic boxing legend and this loss to Jake Paul will not harm his mystique. The Tyson vs Paul match was a money grab that was painful to watch because once again we see the fact that no matter how great of an athlete you were during your prime, Father Time is undefeated.
