Welcome to Play Smarta regular GOLF.com game improvement column that will help you become a smarter and better golfer.
As a young golfer growing up in West Texas, playing into the wind was an everyday occurrence. Regardless of the time of day or time of year, the winds were there always whip
I’m not exactly a Tour pro, but it led to a few things in my development. No. 1, I became a low ball striker. And no. 2, I learned how to shoot in the wind.
The latter is often forgotten. How much can the wind really do to your spinning golf ball?! But when the wind is blowing hard enough, it can certainly have an effect on how it spins – especially on faster greens. This isn’t something you hear a lot about in golf lessons, but if you want to become a well-rounded golfer, learning how to putt into the wind is essential.
For a better idea of how much the wind can affect your shots, check out the video from GOLF Top 100 Teachers Cameron McCormick below.
As you can see in the video above, when the wind is blowing on your line, it can easily blow your ball off its line. In the experiment McCormick runs in the video, a 20 mph blast can throw an 8-foot putt essentially off its line. On a flat putt, so much wind can blow the ball off its line so much that it doesn’t even catch the hole.
So what can you do to make sure you don’t let the wind affect you? also too much for greens? The first thing is to understand it BEN have an effect on how your ball spins. So if you have a wind putter, factor the direction it’s blowing into your readings. It can be subtle, but it should certainly be part of your calculation.
Once you begin to understand how the wind affects your ball on the greens, you can make the necessary adjustments to hit more shots—no matter what conditions you play in.
