South Africa continued at 247/6 but it was a masterclass in temperament and technique from Muthusamy. The left-hander, who was supposed to mature in the previous rounds, produced the best knock of his career – a 109 filled with calm footwork, accurate shot selection and great discipline.
The morning began cautiously before opening after fifty. Fourteen and two sixes ensured that South Africa scored at a healthy rate despite India’s best efforts. Each milestone was met with loud applause from the dressing room, with special applause for Muthusamy’s hundred draws and timing in pressure situations.
Marco Jansen’s power hitting takes the proteas up to 489
If Muthusamy closes the innings, Jansen fires it up. The tall all-rounder smacked scintillating shots, including six fours and seven sixes, including seven sixes – a joint first in a Test innings on Indian soil.
Jansen attacked the Indians with fearless intent Ravindra jadeja takes two massive hits and later Muhammad Siraj with equal authority. His clean hitting took South Africa to 440 and provided the tail-ender with handy runs. Facing a colossal total, the Indian openers had a brief but crucial nine-over spell. Jaishvi Jaiswal (7 *) and Kl rahul (2*), showed good resolve as the close of the game took India to 9/0.
However, with South Africa posting the highest first innings tally by any visiting side in India, the hosts are already in a lot of trouble with the risk of losing the Test. A disciplined batting effort will be required on the day if India are to hold their own in the competition.
