Fakhar Zaman’s career ruined by ‘Babar Azam’ tweet, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirms

On Sunday, October 27, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced revised central contracts for the Pakistan men’s cricket team.

Fakhar Zaman was dropped from the list after criticizing the Pakistan Cricket Board for dropping Babar Azam from the squad for the second and third Test matches against the England National Cricket Team.

In his tweet written on October 13, Fakhar Zaman expressed his concern about the dismissal of Babar Azam. He urged the PCB not to hit the panic button by dropping Babar and even compared his scenario to Virat Kohli not being dropped by the Indian selectors during a lean patch.

The tweet led to the Pakistan Cricket Board issuing him a show cause notice. Also, the relationship between the board and the player deteriorated, leading to Fakhar losing his central contract for the first time in eight years.

Fakhar Zaman, who was earlier part of the B category in central contracts, last played for Pakistan during the 2024 T20 World Cup and now his international cricket career is in serious jeopardy.

Speaking at a press conference where Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha were selected as the new captain and vice-captain of the Pakistan National Cricket Team in white ball cricket, PCB Chairman Fakhar Zaman confirmed that the tweet was indeed a big problem for them.

Mohsin Naqvi said it was ‘unacceptable’ for a player to raise concerns about decisions made by the selection committee and they would always be tough on such matters. However, the PCB chief revealed that Fakhar’s fitness test failure was also the main reason for his omission. Naqvi elaborated:

“The tweet (that he posted) is a problem for us. Although it is not that important that he passes the fitness test. We have to decide on his show cause notice and after that he has to pass his fitness. That’s why he is not participating. He , has led to reforms in our international department selection committee is not allowed and will never be allowed.”

Mohsin Naqvi also congratulated Mohammad Rizwa on his appointment as the white ball captain and expressed confidence in his leadership ability. He elaborated:
