It’s been a surprisingly difficult season for Man City so far, with Pep Guardiola’s side in awful form since their influential Spanish midfielder Rodri went down with a season-ending injury.

The Ballon d’Or winner has shown just how important he is to this City team and while it won’t be easy to replace him, it looks like Ederson is becoming more and more like the club’s first choice.

MCFC fans will be keen to see the Rodri issue addressed in January, with Ederson looking like he could have a huge role to play if he ends up joining.

Even so, Caught offside understands Atalanta are keen not to sell the player this January, especially after losing Teun Koopmeiners in the summer, and with interest growing in Ademola Lookman.

That could complicate matters for City, but it’s also clearly an emergency for Guardiola’s side after seeing their free-fall during Rodri’s absence.

Some City fans may feel they are not out of the title race just yet, and a strong second half of the season could mean there is still a lot to play for.

However, there seems little prospect of that sort of recovery unless the midfield is sorted out with an ambitious signing like this one.

Liverpool could also do well to land a midfield talent like Ederson, though Arne Slot’s team has noticeably lost Martin Zubimendi in the summer
