Ex-Man Utd star Anthony Martial’s Flamengo move collapses

Brazilian side Flamengo have ended talks with former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, according to reports.

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent after his contract at Old Trafford expired in July.

Martial left United after nine years at the club, arriving from Monaco in 2015. During that time, he played 317 times in all competitions, scoring 90 goals and 47 assists as he lifted the FA Cup, EFL Cup, Europa League and Community Shield.

However, Martial has struggled consistently and, according to Transfermarkt, missed 94 games through injury during his time with Manchester United, and was loaned out to Sevilla in the second half of the 2021/22 season.

Even so, Martial’s considerable talent has generated plenty of interest this summer.

Flamengo’s Anthony Martial talks fall apart

Anthony Martial leaves the game, substituted during the English Premier League soccer match between Manchester United and Bournemouth at Old Trafford in Manchester, northwest England, December 9, 2023.

Brazilian giants Flamengo highlighted Martial as a key target recently after star striker Pedro suffered a serious knee injury that will keep him sidelined for the long term.

However, according to a Meia Hora report (via The Sun), the talks have collapsed.

The report claims Martial’s demands were “impossible”, with the 30-time France international insisting on a three-year deal and making wage demands simply too high for Flamengo.

according to capologyMartial earned £13m during his final season with Manchester United. That was enough to put him level with Mason Mount, while only Marcus Rashford (£15.6m), Raphael Varane (£17.68m) and Casemiro (£18.2m sterling) were further tangled.

This equates to £250,000 a week. Even if Martial took a substantial pay cut, Flamengo would struggle to meet his demands, given former Chelsea defender David Luiz is their current highest-paid player on £39,000-a-week (per Salary Sports).
