Everton vs Tottenham: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Two Premier League stalwarts meet at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon as Tottenham Hotspur travel to Everton.

These historic clubs have been trophy-shy in the modern era, and perhaps the two clubs see a bit of themselves in the other. The pair of inherently pessimistic fans have been subject to dismal 2024/25 campaigns so far, although many would argue that Everton are living up to pre-season expectations.

Sean Dyche left the Toffees 16th in the table and barely above the drop zone. David Moyes has since been tapped as his successor, but the returning Scot oversaw a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa in midweek.

Spurs’ torrid run in the Premier League continued on Wednesday arsenal beat the North London Derby 2-1 at the Emirates. Sunday’s visitors remain depleted, but Ange Postecoglou simply needs to oversee an uptick in results soon.

They remain in all cup competitions, Postecoglou’s saving grace, but Spurs’ return from five points from a possible 29 in their previous nine league games can only be described as a form of relegation.

David Moyes

everton He will soon have Dwight McNeil and James Garner available again, but the pair will miss Sunday with respective knee and back injuries.

Seamus Coleman has also picked up muscle problems and is a doubt for the visit of Tottenham, while strikers Youssef Chermiti and Armando Broja are sidelined. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is likely to remain in charge despite his futile display in midweek. Moyes does have Beto as an alternative.

Nathan Patterson could replace Ashley Young at right-back, with Jesper Lindstrom also pushing for a start in attack.

Everton’s predicted line-up against Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Patterson, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Gueye, Mangala; Lindstrom, Doucoure, Ndiaye; Calvert-Lewin.

Richarlison

Richarlison came off the bench in the derby after a couple of months out with a hamstring injury. Son Heung-min scored on Wednesday but he has underperformed this season, and we could soon see the Brazilian emerge as a genuine option on the left for Postecoglou.

Ben Davies could return to the matchday squad on Sunday, but Spurs will likely have to stick with the same makeshift defense at Goodison Park. Brennan Johnson is a sudden doubt with a calf injury later on.

Wilson Odobert, William Vicar, Christian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur and Timo Werner are injured.

Tottenham predicted lineup against Everton (4-3-3): Kinsky; Leek, Dragusin, Gray, Spence; Bissouma, Bergvall, Maddison; Kulusevski, Solanke, Son.

Can both teams lose?

Moyes’ Everton won’t be too dissimilar to Dyche’s iteration, and will remain a tough team to beat, especially at Goodison. The Toffees would have picked up a point on Wednesday if Calvert-Lewin had returned in his own 2020/21 season and not the version he has manifested since.

Spurs should enjoy control and territory here, but have hardly proven capable of picking locks against compact defences. Their set-piece problems haven’t been as noticeable compared to last season, but the hosts will no doubt be looking to dominate these types of situations on Sunday.

All the results are on the table here, but the visitors can walk away with a desperate three points.

Prediction: Everton 1-2 Tottenham
