Everton defeated Chelsea 3-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with striker Beto emerging as the undisputed hero, scoring twice for the dominant Toffees.
The Toffees, coming off a mixed run of form (LWWLL), welcomed a Chelsea side (LWLDD) looking to cement their European aspirations. Chelsea sat comfortably in sixth, five points clear of Everton in ninth, adding extra weight to this Premier League fixture.
The early exchanges saw Chelsea controlling much of the ball, showing their higher possession stats throughout the game. However, Everton’s defense held firm, soaking up pressure and looking for opportunities to break.
Everton’s patience paid off in the 33rd minute. A well-worked move culminated in a pinpoint assist from James Garner, which Beto clinically side-footed past the Chelsea goalkeeper to open the scoring. The home crowd erupted as Everton took a deserved lead.
Chelsea responded by going forward but their attacks lacked the cutting edge to trouble Jordan Pickford. Despite their possession, clear-cut chances remained elusive for the visitors as the first half drew to a close.
At half-time, the Chelsea manager faced a tactical conundrum. Despite enjoying 65% possession, his team was ahead. They needed to find a way to turn their territorial advantage into genuine scoring opportunities.
Chelsea made an early change, bringing on Malo Gusto for an injured player at the start of the second half to provide fresh impetus. The substitutions continued with Romeo Lavia and Pedro Neto also entering the fray later on.
However, it was Everton who struck again in the 62nd minute. Idrissa Gueye’s clever pass found Beto, who made no mistake, scoring his second goal of the afternoon to double Everton’s lead. This goal spoiled Chelsea’s hopes.
Frustration began to show at Chelsea, with Alejandro Garnacho receiving a yellow card in the 69th minute for unsportsmanlike conduct. Everton capitalized further just minutes later.
In the 76th minute, Beto turned provider, assisting Iliman Ndiaye. Ndiaye guided the ball into the net, sealing a comprehensive 3-0 win for Everton and sparking jubilant celebrations among the home support.
The stats highlighted Everton’s clinical efficiency. Despite Chelsea’s 65% possession and 1.11 xG, they managed just four shots on target. Everton, with just 35% possession, had nine shots on target from a total of 10 shots, with an xG of 1.02.
This emphatic win sees Everton close the gap on Chelsea at the Premier League table. It marks a significant win, boosting their confidence and giving them renewed impetus in their quest for a strong league finish.
