The master’s athlete has broken four world records and won multiple world titles in the W85 age group this year.
Masters athlete Evan Williams had a great year, winning world masters gold in the shot put, discus, hammer, javelin and shot put. He also set world records in the shot put (9.42m), discus (22.42) in Gothenburg. m), drag (11.97 m) and javelin throw (24.78 m).
Her athletic journey began as a 200m sprinter with Haringey Athletics Club in 1987. After a hamstring injury at the World Championships in Oregon, she took up throwing and has since become a W85 booster, now aged 86.
The Lee Valley Athletics Center has been instrumental in his success by providing year-round access to both indoor and outdoor facilities, as well as special equipment for throwing events. He also participates in weekly fitness classes such as body conditioning and circuit training. as well as throwing training with regular gym sessions.
“This venue is critical to my success, having both indoor and outdoor facilities that allow me to train year-round,” he says. “It also has all the equipment and throwing equipment I need for my events for training.
“All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and always help me when I need help. Lee Valley Athletics Center is a base for my club (Enfield & Haringey AC) so I can train with my fellow club members and around them.”
Williams also credits the GLL Sport Foundation for easing the financial burden of training, allowing her to focus on competing.
This year’s World Masters, he says, was about more than medals, it was also about reuniting with friends. “It was great to compete with my friends again,” he says.
When asked about the secret of his success, he adds: I’m willing to succeed and do the best I can. I’m not worried about my next performance and how I can improve. Even on those days, I’m involved , when I’m not training, will call to check.”
Looking ahead, Eva has her sights set on the World Masters Championships in Florida in March, where she plans to break her own indoor records.
