European women’s 10km record for Jeanne Van Lent in Nice

The Belgian runner slips more than a minute off her PB to 30:09 as she beats Elish McColgan’s mark of 30:19 from 2022.

Three weeks after finishing fourth European Championship in PortugalJana Van Lent ran a European 10km record of 30:09 at the Prom Classic 10km race in Nice on Sunday (January 4th).

Not only did she knock a minute off her previous time of 31:17, she also broke Eilish McColgan’s European Open record of 30:19, set in the women’s only race at the 2022 Greater Manchester Run, in addition to beating Paula Radcliffe’s European mixed record of 30:2031.

Van Lent crossed the half in 14:42 and slowed down a bit in the second half.

Until Sunday, her claim to fame was winning the European Cup 10,000m in Pasay last May, while she also became the first Belgian to break 15 minutes for the 5,000m in a personal best of 14:37.47.

Alessia Zarbo and Anael Guillonet finished second and third with 31:11 and 31:37, respectively, while 20-year-old Gaston Rohmer won the men’s race with 28:28.

McColgan has the chance to reclaim the record in Valencia on January 11 as he is part of a large British contingent that includes Emile Keires at a course known for producing fast times.

The fastest 10km by a European woman is 30:05, set by Israel’s Lonah Salpeter six years ago in Tilburg, but it has never been certified.
